Baltimore Seeks to Expand Partnership with Businesses to Promote Summer Youth Employment Through Hire One Youth
Deputy Mayor Colin Tarbert to acknowledge local employers for 2014 participation in Hire One Youth and recruit more to join for 2015

WHAT:

Deputy Mayor Colin Tarbert and Greater Baltimore Committee President and CEO Donald C. Fry will thank 2014 Hire One Youth companies and encourage more Baltimore employers to hire at least one job-ready youth for summer of 2015.

In 2014, approximately 5,600 youth, between the ages of 14 and 21, were offered six-week summer employment opportunities through YouthWorks, where they developed familiarity with the workplace, became better prepared to meet employers’ expectations, and gained exposure to career opportunities in a variety of industries. Through Hire One Youth, YouthWorks’ private-sector component, 500 of these young people were hired directly by local companies for a minimum of six weeks. Their summer employers hired a total of 44 for year-round jobs.

WHEN: Monday, November 3, 2014; 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

WHERE:

Cylburn Arboretum
Vollmer Center
4915 Greenspring Avenue
Baltimore, MD 21209

BACKGROUND:  YouthWorks is Baltimore City’s summer jobs program, which places young people between the ages of 14 and 21 in six-week employment opportunities with private sector, nonprofit and city and state government employers throughout the Baltimore City area. To widen the positive impact of YouthWorks and create more summer job opportunities for Baltimore’s teens and young adults with local employers, Mayor Rawlings-Blake launched Hire One Youth – the private-sector component of YouthWorks – in 2012 with a team of local business leaders led by Greater Baltimore Committee’s President and CEO Donald C. Fry. The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development operates YouthWorks with the assistance of employers and workforce partners, and with financial support from a variety of contributors.
