Mayor Rawlings-Blake Announces Launch of Horseshoe Casino Baltimore Comprehensive Local Hiring Program

Search for Qualified Local Job Candidates to Include Community Partnerships, Neighborhood Events, and Hiring Fairs

BALTIMORE, Md. (January 28, 2014)—Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and executives of Horseshoe Casino Baltimore announced the details of an expansive program to inform city residents about the 1,700 new jobs being created by the $442 million casino entertainment complex. The hiring program, which begins next month, will use a creative mix of recruitment efforts to identify qualified local job candidates to staff the casino in advance of its third quarter 2014 grand opening.

Working in conjunction with Mayor Rawlings-Blake, the Baltimore City Council, and the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED), Horseshoe Baltimore will conduct city-wide outreach to educate residents about available positions, job qualifications, and the application process. By partnering with MOED and a wide range of community groups, neighborhood associations, and civic organizations, the Horseshoe recruiting team will reach out to job seekers to promote special neighborhood-based recruitment events. The team will employ promotion methods ranging from neighborhood canvassing to social media campaigns to spread the word. A complete schedule of neighborhood recruitment events is available at www.horseshoebaltimore.com.

“The Horseshoe Casino will serve as an economic engine, driving new jobs, tax revenues, and increased development,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “From the beginning, Horseshoe has been committed to promoting local hiring and working with MOED to provide Baltimore City residents with information and access to the 1,700 jobs that will be created upon opening. The strong public-private partnership between the City and Horseshoe has resulted in a comprehensive recruitment strategy that couldn’t have come at a better time, as many families are struggling to find job opportunities.”

“We will leave no stone unturned in our search for exceptional team members,” said Chad Barnhill, Horseshoe Baltimore senior vice president and general manager. “We’re going to be out in the city’s neighborhoods, meeting residents and informing them about how they can apply for positions that match their skills. Using a mix of modern technology and old-fashioned grass roots tactics, we intend to recruit a Horseshoe workforce that represents the very best that the City of Baltimore has to offer.”

As an additional resource, job seekers can enroll in Horseshoe Baltimore’s Legendary Candidates Academy, a series of two-day, six-hour training sessions operated in conjunction with MOED and its workforce partners. The sessions will provide in-depth information about the requirements for various positions, outline the pre-employment process, underscore Horseshoe Baltimore’s emphasis on exceptional customer service, and prepare candidates for position-specific interviews. Job seekers who successfully complete the Academy will receive special hiring consideration. Horseshoe Baltimore’s Legendary Candidates Academy sessions are currently scheduled at locations throughout the city, and more sessions will continue to be added. For more information, visit MOED at www.oedworks.com. For a listing of times and locations, or to RSVP, job seekers can visit thehorseshoelegendaryacademy.eventbrite.com.

Horseshoe will also promote open positions via the Baltimore City and Maryland chambers of commerce, and through partnerships with local colleges and universities, select philanthropies and religious organizations, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (Divine Nine), and the Enoch Pratt Free Library. In addition, Horseshoe will utilize paid advertising, social media, and community association meetings to spread the work about employment opportunities.

Horseshoe Baltimore will host a series of large-scale hiring events at the Baltimore Convention Center (March 7 – 9), Hyatt Regency Baltimore (May 3 – 5), and M&T Bank Stadium (May 19 – 21). All applications must be submitted online.

“Horseshoe is Baltimore’s casino, and we want Baltimore’s best working for us,” said Barnhill. “We’re excited to be taking our local hiring initiatives to an entirely new level as we continue to prepare for an on-schedule unveiling of Horseshoe Baltimore later this year.”

Horseshoe Baltimore, being developed by CBAC Gaming, LLC, is located along Russell Street on Baltimore’s south side. As a city-integrated casino, it is designed to maximize connectivity with existing hospitality operators, neighboring sports venues (M&T Bank Stadium and Oriole Park at Camden Yards), and Baltimore’s famed Inner Harbor. The casino will house 122,000 square feet of gaming space, including 2,500 video lottery terminals, 100 table games, and a 25-table World Series of Poker-branded poker room.
