This week, we announced the City’s second annual Clean Community Competition. The contest offers participating communities an opportunity to win a $5,000 cash prize for their efforts to clean up their neighborhoods. In last year’s competition 72 communities from across Baltimore participated, and eight winners shared the $24,000 prize.
The Clean Community Competition challenges communities throughout Baltimore to get involved in cleaning up their neighborhoods on a daily basis. Communities will be judged on cleaning efforts and criteria including an overall increase in recycling tonnage, removing debris from lots, cleaning streets and alleys, clearing and sweeping storm drains, and—new this year—greening or beautification efforts. Extra points will be awarded for adopting vacant lots through the Power in Dirt initiative and for installing clean-themed storm drain stencils.
A judging committee will assess improvements and overall cleanliness in September, and the winners will be announced on October 26 at the kickoff of the Mayor’s Fall Cleanup. Neighborhoods in each of four sections of the city will compete for four first place prizes of $5,000. Four second place finishers will win $1,000.
Communities can register for the contest through Wednesday, May 15. The judging period for the contest begins May 20 and ends September 20. Winners will be announced on October 16. For additional information or to register for the competition, community association leaders should call 311 or visit the Clean Community Competition website.
Tomorrow, we will join residents, community leaders, and elected officials to kick off the 2013 Mayor’s Annual Spring Cleanup. The Mayor’s Annual Cleanups started in 2000 with volunteers removing 2,500 tons of debris from their neighborhoods. Since then, nearly 20,000 tons of debris has been removed during the annual event. This year, over 200 community organizations and 5,800 volunteers signed up to participate in this annual spring cleaning tradition.
The Clean Community Competition and our Spring Cleanup are great ways to renew your commitment to keeping the city clean, and I hope you will join your fellow residents in these efforts. Events like these bring people together to clean streets, clean waterways, and clean neighborhoods—connecting residents to their communities and to each other.

Baltimore Snapshot
Artist Danamarie Hosler imbues her Park Heights mural with a heartwarming charm, artfully demonstrating the ways in which Baltimore's residents touch each other's lives.
This mural was partially supported by Sinai Hospital. Hosler and other artists have contributed their skills to beautify buildings throughout Baltimore as part of the CityPaint mural program.
Baltimore's Top Neighborhood Dads Nominations
Do you have a neighbor who should be honored for the strength with which they lead your community? If you know a man who is giving back where you live, ask your neighborhood association to nominate your top neighborhood dad. The person does not have to be a parent, just a caretaker of the community. If chosen, he will join Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake at the Top Neighborhood Dads luncheon in June—just in time for Father's Day. The nomination form is available online.
Aprons in Action: Vote for Baltimore Station
Throughout April, The Baltimore Station—a residential recovery program that helps homeless veterans bound by drug and alcohol addiction become self-sufficient—is enlisting your help to win a $25,000 gift card from The Home Depot. Vote each day in The Home Depot Foundation’s Aprons in Action Facebook contest—and don't forget to share the contest with all your friends! To vote, visit www.baltimorestation.org/vote and click on The Baltimore Station.
Baltimore Online Citizen Survey
The annual Baltimore Citizen Survey aims to identify trends and attitudes regarding quality of life indicators and City services. Survey results will be used to inform and enhance program planning and policy development across all City agencies. The online survey is an unscientific collection of responses that supplements the randomly selected telephone survey. Check out the survey any time between April 1 and June 1. Don't miss this simple opportunity to offer feedback on the City services you rely on every day!
