City of Baltimore Relaunches Ceremonial Street Sign Application Process
BALTIMORE, MD (September 18, 2026) – Today, the City of Baltimore today announced the relaunch of its Ceremonial Street Sign application process, offering residents a renewed opportunity to honor individuals, organizations, and communities that have made meaningful contributions to the city’s neighborhoods and history.
The Ceremonial Street Sign program allows communities to recognize legacies that reflect Baltimore’s diversity, shared values, and civic pride. The updated application process is designed to improve accessibility, clarity, and transparency for residents seeking to commemorate those who have helped shape the city.
The Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs (MOCA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) will oversee the application review and installation process, working closely with community members to ensure requests meet established guidelines. Applicants will receive a determination within 45 business days of submission.
“Our neighborhoods are full of people whose contributions have never been formally recognized, and this program is a meaningful way to start changing that,” said MOCA Director Kris Burnett. “We want the process to be clear and accessible so communities can focus on what matters most: honoring the legacies that have helped make Baltimore what it is.”
As part of the enhanced community engagement process, nearby residents, businesses, and stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide public feedback during a 15-day community notice period. During that time, a public notice sign containing a QR code and online comment portal will be posted near the proposed ceremonial street sign location to allow community members to submit comments, questions, or objections regarding the proposed designation.
The revised policy also establishes standardized eligibility criteria for individuals, nonprofit organizations, and religious institutions seeking recognition. Among the new requirements:
• Individual honorees must demonstrate at least 10 years of continuous community involvement or significant contributions to the City of Baltimore.
• Nonprofit and religious organizations must demonstrate at least 20 years of active service and community impact.
• All prospective honorees must demonstrate a substantial connection to the proposed street location.
Approved ceremonial street signs will remain installed for one year from the installation date. Following the display period, applicants may request to retain the physical sign upon removal.
Application fees include a $50 non-refundable fee for the required public notice sign and a $150 fabrication and installation fee for approved ceremonial signs.
