Baltimore Police Warn Citizens to be Aware of Craigslist Robberies

Learn what you can do to avoid becoming a victim

The Baltimore Police Department is warning citizens about an increase in internet-related robberies that are occurring within the city.  In recent cases which detectives believe to be related, suspects are using internet sites like Craigslist to lure victims to lightly populated residential areas and robbing them of cash and valuables. One location that is being used in several incidents is the 3500 block of Callaway Avenue in Northwest Baltimore.

District Detectives have positive leads in several of these cases but urge individuals who use internet commerce sites to follow the following safety tips:

  • Conduct your transactions in a well populated area during the day - shopping malls and busy plazas with heavy foot traffic make good locations.

  • Know your vendor - Ask for a name and do your homework. In the State of Maryland, criminal histories are available to the public by visiting casesearch.courts.state.md.us.

  • Pay with certified or bank checks made payable to the name of the seller. This helps to make sure the seller’s name is real and also prevents you from carrying large amounts of cash.
