City of Baltimore Mobilizing to Address Severe Weather Impacts on
Trash, Recycling, and Water Services

BALTIMORE, MD – The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW), in collaboration with the Department of Transportation (DOT), is working to address delays in trash and recycling collections caused by last week’s severe weather. With freezing temperatures, fluctuating weather conditions, and snowstorms impacting city operations, DPW and DOT have ramped up efforts to restore essential services to residents.

Trash and Recycling Collection

Beginning this weekend, DOT is salting and clearing ice-covered alleys to restore access for trash collection following addressing primary and secondary roads.

DPW crews, supported by emergency contractors, are working extended hours, including weekends, to prioritize outstanding collections.

Residents with missed trash or recycling pickups are encouraged to call 311 to assist crews in resolving delays.

Important Notes for Residents:

  • Trash and recycling collections will be handled separately. If trash is collected while recycling remains, a separate truck will follow to complete recycling pickup.
  • Residents are asked to move trash and recycling bins to the edge of their yards to allow DOT crews to clear alleyways.
  • Street sweeping services remain suspended until further notice due to continued low temperatures.

Water Main Breaks and Repairs

The recent freezing and thawing cycles have caused an increase in water main breaks across Baltimore City and Baltimore County service areas. DPW has deployed extra crews and emergency contractors to repair breaks quickly and safely. Crews will continue to work through the weekend and the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to restore water service to affected residents.

The City’s ongoing 15-mile water main replacement program also continues to address long-term infrastructure reliability.

What Residents Can Do

Report Water Main Breaks:

  • Baltimore City residents should call 311 or use the mobile app/online portal.
  • Baltimore County customers can call 443-263-2220.
  • Track repair progress using DPW’s Interactive Map.

Prevent Frozen Pipes:

  • Let a thin stream of water run from a basement faucet to prevent freezing.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Shut off water to outdoor faucets and insulate pipes in unheated areas.
  • Locate and test your home’s water shutoff valve to ensure it is functioning properly.
  • Keep bottled water on hand for emergencies.

Property Maintenance:

Property owners are responsible for maintaining water lines from the meter to their homes and internal plumbing.

DPW and DOT remain committed to working collaboratively to restore services impacted by severe weather and appreciate residents’ patience and cooperation during this time.
