Mayor Rawlings-Blake Announces Openings for AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates

 

Associates will help elementary school students develop reading skills this summer.
 

 

BALTIMORE, MD. (April 11, 2012) –Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced an effort to recruit individuals to be AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates. The Summer Associates will work at a full-day, six-week Summer Reading Academy to ensure 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students are reading at grade level. The academy will serve as many as 2,000 students who are in need of reading support.

“We know that learning loss in the summer is a contributing factor to poor academic achievement during the school year,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “We are proud to work with the School System to provide students with an opportunity to learn and grow in a safe environment. This summer, we need young adults to join our effort to improve academic achievement in Baltimore’s schools.”

The AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates will serve as Reading Counselors at one of the school-based or other learning sites throughout the city. Associates will be assigned a group of 10 to 12 students for the length of the program. Experienced and certified elementary school teachers will supervise and mentor each Associate to ensure that each student accomplishes their goals for the summer.

Those interested in joining must be available from June 15 through August 11, at least 18 years old, and either a Baltimore City resident or attending college in Baltimore. A qualified Associate is eligible to receive a $1,175 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or stipend and a living allowance of $2,071 to cover necessities.
