Executive Letter: Supporting Vulnerable Neighbors During Times of Extreme Heat
Dear Baltimore,
The summer is still heating up and we have already experienced intense waves of extreme heat which pose significant health risks for people experiencing homelessness. While MOHS remains dedicated to serving the needs of our vulnerable neighbors, we are also a resource to all Baltimore City residents.
This Code Red season we are excited for the addition of the Weinberg Housing & Resource Center to MOHS' list of available cooling centers that will serve as an additional access point for residents along the central Downtown corridor. We are also thankful for the continued collaboration of our partners at the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) that allow us to bridge the gaps between our communities while ensuring that all residents have access to cool spaces, cold water, and other resources as temperatures rise.
In alignment with BCHD, during times of extreme heat we encourage you to drink plenty of water, reduce outdoor activities, check on your neighbors, and utilize the full list of BCHD cooling centers to stay safe this season.
In service, Ernestina Simmons, LCSW-C Executive Director

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Damien Andrew Haussling who was a long-time member of the Continuum of Care (CoC), the CoC Board, the Homeless Response System (HRS) Committee, co-founder of the Baltimore Furniture Bank, and dear friend to many.
As a person with lived experience of homelessness, Haussling dedicated his life to advocating for people experiencing poverty and homelessness. Haussling was a lifelong servant who served a vital role in the Baltimore Affordable Housing Trust Fund Commission, Baltimore Area Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau, Housing Our Neighbors (HON), B'more Housing for All, Baltimore's Voices of Homelessness, and more. Among his many achievements, he was awarded the 2019 Open Society Institute Community Fellowship in which he co-founded the Baltimore Furniture Bank which provides free furniture to individuals and families in need, including people exiting homelessness.
Haussling will be remembered for his impact in the community, his willingness and dedication to serve, and his many significant efforts in the fight to end homelessness in Baltimore City. The Baltimore Furniture Bank is holding a celebration of life service on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at St. Vincent De Paul Church (120 N. Front Street, Baltimore, MD 21202) from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. and all are welcome to attend.
Congratulations to our FY2025 Consolidated Funding Awardees! Through this process we have been able to award over $16 million to support the work of community-based providers through the MD DHCD Homeless Solutions Program (HSP), Emergency Solutions Grant, HOPWA, Department of Social Services, and General Funds. We are thankful to all of the organizations who submitted applications and are appreciative of your passion and commitment to serve clients experiencing homelessness.
