Baltimore City Residents Invited to First of Five Public Meetings to Gather Feedback on Development of 10-Year Solid Waste Management Plan
How to Attend and Provide Comments for February 22, 2023, Meeting to Develop City’s 10-Year Solid Waste Management Plan
The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold the first of five public meetings on February 22 to gather feedback on the 60 percent draft of the 10-Year Solid Waste Management Plan. The meeting will be held online via Webex (registration information below).
DPW is encouraging residents, people who work in Baltimore, environmental advocates, business and education leaders, and all other stakeholders to participate in the development of the plan by attending meetings or submitting comments for discussion.
What’s is the Solid Waste Management Plan?
The plan identifies the goals for managing the City’s solid waste stream, assesses the existing solid waste collection systems both public and private, current and future disposal capacity needs, and the ways in which reuse, recycling, and composting from residential, institutional, and commercial sources are to be implemented. The review and updates to the plan will include an overview of the City of Baltimore’s solid waste management and the impact of federal, state, and local regulations; descriptions of regional setting, population projections, and the current requirements and policies for the City’s Comprehensive Plan; and the incorporation of policies and programs recommended in the City’s 2019 Baltimore Sustainability Plan and the 2018 Baltimore Food Waste Recovery Strategy.
How to participate:
Two weeks prior to each meeting, plan drafts will be released on the 10-Year Solid Waste Management Plan website for a public comment period. Residents and stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide written comments by posting them directly on the Konveio platform (a digital outreach program that turns regular PDFs into social documents where users can directly comment their feedback), by emailing them to SolidWastePlan@baltimorecity.gov, or mailing them to Solid Waste Management Plan, 200 Holliday St., 10th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21201. Residents and stakeholders will also have the opportunity to give comments in public meetings. All meetings will be recorded and made available to the public.
The first public meeting is on February 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Webex. Register for the Webex meeting here.
The remaining virtual meetings will present an overview of plan drafts at the 90 percent and 99 percent benchmarks. In April, there will be two hybrid in-person and virtual public meetings to present the final draft. Register for March and April virtual meetings here.
