Update on Sinkhole at Montebello I Water Treatment Plant

“On Wednesday afternoon, Department of Public Works (DPW) personnel discovered a sinkhole at the Montebello 1 Water Treatment Plant, likely caused by erosion to a stormwater main installed in the 1880s. To ensure the safe mitigation of the sinkhole, DPW has determined that the best course of action is to stop the flow through the exposed 84-inch water main that is currently partially suspended above the sinkhole. This action is out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of those working at the location.

“DPW personnel conducted water system testing, confirming no bacteriological contamination. Due to the 84-inch water main being taken offline, a 48" water main is being activated, and some customers may experience lower than normal water pressure.

“DPW continues to work with our state and local partners to stabilize the site safely. Additionally, DPW is in regular communication with the Maryland Department of Environment.

“DPW and the entire Scott Administration remain committed to keeping residents and businesses informed and will provide regular updates as information becomes available.

Director Jason W. Mitchell, Ed.D.
