BALTIMORE, MD (March 5, 2012)—Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Baltimore City Department of Transportation Director Khalil Zaied announced the names of the members of the Strategic Transportation Safety Task Force. The newly formed advisory committee will address transportation safety issues and concerns in the city. The Transportation Safety Task Force is comprised of thirty members, representing community organizations, health and research institutions, advocacy groups, government agencies, and other groups that are working to improve transportation safety.
Modeled after other successful state and local highway safety plans, the Task Force will develop a stakeholder supported and action oriented Strategic Transportation Safety Plan to reduce property damage, injuries, and fatalities on city streets. The Task Force will spend the next nine months learning about the state of transportation safety in Baltimore and will develop a plan to improve conditions in the city.
“A significant part of growing Baltimore in the next 10 years will be improving the streets for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “Thousands of people use our streets every day to get to work, walk to school, and enjoy everything this great city has to offer. We must work constantly to make our streets safer and more accommodating to everyone who uses them. I am confident that the members of the Strategic Transportation Safety Task Force can provide solutions to improve the quality of life in Baltimore’s communities.”
“The Department of Transportation will work closely with the Strategic Transportation Safety Task Force to identify safety improvements that will reduce pedestrian injuries and accidents in the City,” said Department of Transportation Director Khalil Zaied. “We look forward to implementing a plan that will make our streets safer for the citizens of Baltimore.”
