Now in Effect: Bi-Weekly Recycling Collections

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works Department (DPW) has implemented Bi-Weekly Recycling Collections to bring stability and predictability to recycling routes impacted by delays due to staffing challenges caused by COVID-19.

On January 18, DPW began Bi-Weekly Recycling Collections, picking up recycling every other week, using an alternating A and B cycle system for curbside collection services:

Northeast and Northwest  neighborhoods will be on Week A of the alternating schedule. The next recycling collection date for NE/NW parts of the City will be the week of February 1 - 4.

Southeast and Southwest will be on Week B of the alternating schedule. The next recycling collection date for SE/SW parts of the City will be the week of February 8 – 11.

Your recycling collection day does NOT change under Bi-Weekly Recycling Collections.

To help navigate the recycling modifications, residents can visit DPW’s new online map that shows their recycling day and whether the address is on the A or B cycle.

Weekly trash collections will NOT be impacted by the new recycling schedule.

Your New Recycling Cart

New Recycling Carts

New, 65-gallon, Residential Recycling Carts have been distributed to over 149,000 Baltimore City households as of January 10. Similar to the Municipal Trash Can program, each household will receive a container for recycling.

Ready to Start Recycling? Check out our easy-to-use Recycle Right Tool to learn more about the proper disposal of household items!

Haven’t Received a New Cart? Click the link below to see when you can expect to receive a cart. It has been updated to reflect faster distribution time. Find your estimated delivery date. Please continue to use any container you want: paper bags, cardboard boxes, old laundry baskets – you can even use a trash can (just mark it “recycling”). There is only one rule: Do not place recycling in plastic bags!

When will the small cart that I requested arrive? The smaller, 35-gallon carts  are in stock, and DPW has started distributing them to residents who have requested a smaller cart.

Ready to Recycle Your Christmas Tree?

Recycle Your Christmas Tree

Did you know that your live Christmas Tree can be 100 percent recycled? Residents have until Saturday, February 5, to bring Christmas trees to Northwest Residential Drop-Off, 2840 Sisson Street for mulching, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Trees must be free of ornaments and tinsel. This is a great opportunity to see recycling in action, as residents are encouraged to bring bags or containers to collect mulch and bring it home for personal use.

There are approximately 25-30 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year. Recycled trees have multiple uses and although live trees are biodegradable, recycling eliminates additional debris to our landfills and helps start a new life cycle that will go beyond the holidays.

Recycle, Donate Unused Electronics

Recycle Electronic Items

Out with the Old, In with the New! Let's E-Cycle!

If your electronics are getting an upgrade this year, consider recycling or donating unused items. Several charities, non-profits, second-hand stores, shelters, and other organizations accept electronic donations.

Check out this Donation Directory to find an organization near you!

If items can’t be donated, all five of DPW's Residential Drop-Off Centers accept old unused electronics, this includes holiday lights.

Drop Off Your Food Scraps

Food Scrap Drop Off

The Food Scrap Drop-off Pilot Program has diverted over 26, 965 pounds of food scraps from Baltimore City's waste streams. Launched in July 2021, the Food Scrap Drop-Off Pilot aims to raise awareness about food waste and reduce food in Baltimore’s residential waste stream. Food scraps are being collected throughout the city at five existing waste drop-off centers, then composted by the local compost service, Compost Crew. As documented in the 2019 Baltimore Sustainability Plan, Baltimore City has set an ambitious goal to reduce half of all food waste generated in the city by 2030.  .
