Unanimously approved, the City Council local hiring bill becomes law with mayor's signature
Legislation guarantees residents more access to jobs created through government contracts
BALTIMORE, MD (Monday, Oct.18, 2021) – Baltimore City Council President Nick J. Mosby issued the following statement in response to Mayor Scott's signature on the local hiring legislation:
"Now law, more residents — especially those who are economically and socially disadvantaged — will be guaranteed more access to jobs created through government contracts as a result of the City Council’s legislative work.
"In order to be competitive when bidding on city contracts, companies will be required to submit employment plans that reflect a commitment to hire, train and retain Baltimore residents. Our legislation puts special emphasis on opportunities for city workers who have been locked out of the job market due to a number of factors, including past incarceration. What’s more, this measure helps the city reach for better equity on behalf of our families, as we have all pledged to do.
"We thank Mayor Scott for continuing to be our partner in progress, and congratulations to Chairman Stokes on shepherding this important bill through the legislative process."
