DPW Food Scrap Drop-Off Pilot Program

Baltimore City residents can now drop off food scraps for composting at all five of DPW’s Residential Drop-Off locations. This drop-off initiative is a pilot program funded by a grant agreement with NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) as part of the Food Matters Regional Initiative. The partnership between the City and NRDC seeks to implement projects to advance food waste prevention, food rescue and composting.

In addition to the DPW Residential Drop-off sites, residents can still bring food waste to our two farmers’ market collection sites, JFX Farmers’ Market and the 32nd Street Farmers’ Market. Check the locations and times below to figure out which drop off location works best for you!

Volunteer at a Farmers' Market Food Scrap Drop-Off Site!

farmers market

Looking for an easy opportunity to help the environment? DPW is recruiting volunteers to help out at the farmers’ markets on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We are collecting food scraps every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the 32nd Street Farmers’ Market and every Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the JFX Farmers’ Market

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 30 – 40 percent of food produced for human consumption is never eaten. In Baltimore alone, 100,000 tons of food waste is generated each year. These materials, which could have been reused or composted, are being sent to a landfill or other facility.

Volunteers help keep the drop-off site organized and share information about food waste with residents. These drop-off centers accept fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, grains, and eggshells. Because the scraps are being fed to pigs, it is important to remember the food scrap guidelines and avoid contaminants such as paper towels and produce stickers. Volunteers can ensure that the material dropped off meets the criteria.

By volunteering, you will be helping fight food waste in your community. Interested in volunteering at the markets? Sign up today!

Upcoming Events

August 14 Shredding Event

    • DPW will offer a free paper shredding for Baltimore City residents on Saturday, August 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2600 Liberty Heights Ave.
    • This event is a great way to responsibly get rid of bills and other sensitive documents. Residents can bring up to two garbage bags of documents to be shredded. Any bags containing non-paper materials will not be accepted. Once shredded, the documents will be taken directly to a recycling facility.
    • There will also be an interactive compost workshop at this shredding event. Composting is one way to significantly reduce your food waste. Feel free to stop by and learn about the many benefits of composting and how it works!

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

hhw21
  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection has returned. This is an opportunity for Baltimore City residents to dispose of hazardous household materials such as oil-based paints, pesticides, herbicides, car and household batteries, drain cleaners, and many other items. Latex paint is NOT hazardous waste, it can be dried up and the cans put out for regular trash collection.
  • Residents can drop off HHW items at the Sisson Street Drop Off Center, 2840 Sisson Street. HHW season runs from April to October, and generally occurs on the first Friday and Saturday of the month. The next collection event will be August 6 and 7.
  • For more information on materials accepted and the complete schedule, please see our flyer.
