Flash Flooding is Expected Thursday, Could Cause Signal Outages and Flooded Roadways in the Harbor East, Fells Point, and Canton Neighborhoods
BALTIMORE, MD (December 24, 2020) – The Baltimore City Department of Transportation would like to advise motorists that there is a Flash Flood Watch, Coastal Flood Watch, Wind Advisory, and Gale Warning in effect today, Thursday, December 24, 2020 into tomorrow morning Friday, December 25, 2020.
The Department of Transportation has begun preparations for the possible flash and coastal flooding by having additional crews on standby and ready to respond if needed. Flash and coastal flooding, along with heavy winds could cause downed trees, power outages and traffic signal outages throughout the city. Residents are encouraged to report downed polls to 311. Motorists should be on the watch for possible debris in city roadways and traffic signals that may be in flash mode or not operational. Drivers approaching an intersection with malfunctioning traffic signals should treat it as a four-way stop and proceed with extreme caution for everyone’s safety.
Baltimore residents in low-lying areas should prepare for possible flooding and move their vehicles to higher ground, especially in the Harbor East, Fells Point, and Canton neighborhoods. Residents are strongly advised not to walk or drive through flooded areas. Motorists who encounter flooded roadways should turn around, use alternate routes and avoid moving/bypassing any barricades that have been placed by emergency officials for safety.
Fells Point residents who have their vehicles parked in areas prone to flooding are strongly encouraged to relocate their cars as soon as possible. The Eden Street Garage (501 S. Eden Street) and the Caroline Street Garage (805 S Caroline Street) will be open from 5:30 p.m. this evening (December 24, 2020) until tomorrow 12:00 p.m. (December 25, 2020) so that residents can park their cars in the garage at no charge to avoid possible flooding in the area. Space is limited and available on a first come, first served basis and vehicles must be moved out of the garage by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 25, 2020 to avoid any fees.
