RouteSmart

New Software to Optimize
Water Billing Process

DPW's Water Billing Operations Division is implementing RouteSmart Software to enable the Department to optimize the City’s automated meter reading technology.

“The RouteSmart software will enable DPW to optimize the City’s automated meter technology by regrouping the way we collect our readings, record usage, and the order in which we issue bills to our customers,” said Acting DPW Director Matthew W. Garbark.

DPW’s Customer Support and Services Division, which oversees the Department’s water bill operation, began implementing the RouteSmart software on November 20, 2020.

During the software’s initial implementation, some Baltimore City customers may notice that water bill charges received after November 20 will cover a slightly shorter or longer billing period, less than 28 days or longer than 28 days.

Enjoy Your Feast But Can the Grease!

As we begin to cook festive Thanksgiving meals, residents are reminded to properly dispose of fats, oils and grease (FOG).

FOG-laden wastewater, when discharged into the City’s sanitary sewer system, accumulates in the pipes and creates sewer backups, usually through kitchen and bathroom fixtures. These blockages can also result in sanitary sewer overflows, which pollute streets and streams.

To keep your wastewater flowing away from your house, make sure your FOG goes “From the Pan to the Can.”  Instead of putting grease down drains, sinks, toilets, or storm drains, pour your cooled cooking oil and animal fat into the garbage or a container such as a metal can. Prior to washing pots, pans, and dishes, wipe away the FOG and dispose of the FOG-laden rags, napkins, or paper towels in the garbage.

Dish soaps and hot water are only temporary solutions. The FOG congeals again when the water cools and the soap separates from the grease.

Cold Weather is Here!
Let a Thin, Steady Stream Flow!

When temperatures drop below freezing, let a thin stream of cold water run from a basement faucet.

The stream should be a continuous flow, about the thickness of a pencil lead. This water can be caught in a bucket and used later.

Water Emergencies

DPW maintains outdoor water lines up to and including the meter. Water lines running from the meter to the house, and internal plumbing, are the responsibility of the property owner.

For water emergencies in Baltimore City, please call 311, or call 410-396-5352 in our Baltimore County service area.

Celebrating Our 2020 YH2O Participants

On Friday, November 20, Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young joined  DPW and its partners, the Chesapeake Water Environment Association (CWEA) and Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED), to virtually celebrate the 6th Class of participants of the YH20 Career Mentoring Program. Seventeen young adults have successfully completed six months of training to prepare for entry-level jobs in DPW, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. DPW’s YH20 Career Mentoring Program began in 2015.  Since that time, 96 young men and women have completed the Program. Learn More
