As the City of Baltimore continues to respond to COVID-19, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MIMA) is working to ensure that critical information is available in multiple languages. For multilingual up-to-date information regarding the city’s response, follow us on Facebook

Adelante Latina accepting applications!

Do you know of a bright, rising 10th grade Baltimore City Latina who has a dream of going to college? Adelante Latina can help get her there! They are still accepting applications for September. Send a message to Adelante Latina for more information. 

Vendor applications for Lexington Market are open!

The application process is open to both current vendors and new concepts. Vendor applications will be accepted online from now through Oct. 2, 2020 at www.transformlexington.com. A second round of vendor applications will be accepted beginning in January 2021, with a round two deadline in March 2021.

Predatory insurance scam targeting Northwest Baltimore residents

The Mayor’s Office has learned of a potential predatory insurance fraud scam and contractors targeting residents in the area around the recent home explosion in Northwest Baltimore. Do you think that you or one of your neighbors might be the target of insurance fraud? Please contact the Maryland Insurance Administrations Insurance Fraud Division at 1-800-846-4069 (toll free) or complete the insurance fraud referral form and send it to fraud_referrals.mia@maryland.gov. Please note that the phone line and referral form are available in English only. 

Chance to win $75 for East Baltimore residents who complete the 2020 census!

Do you live in East Baltimore? Have you completed your 2020 census? Do you want a chance to win a $75 gift card? Southeast Community Development Corporation and Banner Neighborhoods invite you to participate in their 2020 census raffle! Complete your census, screenshot the confirmation page and add that confirmation page to this Facebook event. A new winner will be chosen each week. 

People who usually do not file taxes may be eligible for the federal stimulus payment 

Complete this online form with the IRS by October 15th. The form has to be completed online – there is no paper form – and people without bank accounts will receive a debit card or check in the mail. Read more information about the CARES Act relief payments in English and Spanish


Amy Soukup Headshot

Welcome Amy Soukup to the MIMA team!

Amy joins us as the New American Opportunity Fellow as she pursues her Masters in Economic Policy Analysis at UMBC. Amy has worked in organizations supporting populations experiencing homelessness in both her hometown of Minneapolis, MN and as an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Austin, TX. Amy also served in Albania as a Community and Economic Development Volunteer with the Peace Corps. In her role with MIMA, Amy will be working on an immigrant business focused project. This task will include researching existing business supports, creating a multilingual guide for business owners, and designing and implementing a curriculum for technical assistance providers to better serve entrepreneurs. Amy can be reached at amy.soukup@baltimorecity.gov, and she looks forward to e-meeting and interacting with many of you in the coming months! Welcome, Amy!


Community Spotlight

Last week, Mayor Young held a press conference to encourage every Baltimore City resident to get counted on the 2020 Census! He was joined by Delegate Stephanie Smith, MIMA Director Catalina Rodriguez Lima, Pedro Palomino of Somos Baltimore Latino and the President of the New Broadway East Community Association. Watch the whole press conference including Pedro Palomino’s remarks in Spanish! The Mayor’s Office and our community partners are engaging in a final push campaign to get everyone counted on the 2020 census. Make sure you complete your census by September 30th and keep an eye out for census enumerators in your neighborhood. See graphic below for information on what to expect if an enumerator comes to your door.

Public Justice Center- Paralegal, Human Right to Housing (Bilingual Spanish-English strongly preferred)

The Human Right to Housing Project seeks the realization of a human right to housing that is fair, affordable, habitable, and accessible, with security of tenure and cultural adequacy. The Human Right to Housing Team develops and implements its project priorities with the goal of dismantling white supremacy and advancing race equity. Project attorneys and paralegals provide legal services to low-income tenants in eviction and habitability cases, collaborate with community organizing partners to build tenant power, and advocate in state and local legislatures and government agencies for tenants’ rights. Visitation Monitor, Part-Time (Bilingual Spanish-English required)

The City of Baltimore’s Department of Human Resources (DHR) is seeking a bilingual monitor for the City’s Visitation and Exchange Center. Baltimore City’s Visitation Center is a safe place where families with histories of domestic violence (intimate partner violence) can engage in visitation between children and their visiting parents in a monitored setting or can participate in monitored exchanges of children for weekend visits with their non-custodial parents. The selected candidate will report to the Center’s Program Director and work closely with Center Supervisors, Security and other staff Monitors. This individual must be collaborative, possess emotional intelligence and have the ability to exercise sound decision making and judgment that demonstrates a high regard for the safety, respect and confidentiality of all Center staff, visitors and partners. Community School Coordinator, Highlandtown Elementary/Middle School #215 (Bilingual Spanish-English required)

This position is created under the Baltimore City community school engagement strategy, a joint effort between school administration and the Southeast Community Development Corporation. The Coordinator partners with the principal, and other administrators, teachers, school staff, parents, school-family council, community members, and students to design and implement programs and services to meet the needs of students, their families and the community.  The Coordinator is required to be fluent in English and Spanish. Human Services Manager- Baltimore City Community Action Partnership (Bilingual Spanish-English preferred)

The Mayor's Office of Children & Family Success seeks a Human Services Manager to oversee the operation of a Community Action Partnership center in Baltimore City which provides such human service assistance as case management, community liaison, project management and information and referral work to residents of the City. Program Manager, Economic Empowerment - the International Rescue Committee

The Program Manager for Economic Empowerment (EE) programs is responsible for the strategic guidance, outcome tracking and measurement, management and daily coordination of economic empowerment programs in the Baltimore office. This includes overseeing grant-funded employment programs covering entry level and career development services, financial coaching and loan programs, and new and short-term economic empowerment initiatives. The manager will work with the deputy director, other program leads and the senior management team to develop strategies to effectively identify needs, implement new and existing programs, ensure holistic service delivery, and support proposal development and program design.
