Keeping You Informed

As the City of Baltimore continues to respond to COVID-19 under the leadership of Mayor Young, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MIMA) is working to ensure that critical information is available in multiple languages. For multilingual up-to-date information regarding the city’s response, follow us on Facebook. In addition, MIMA has been working closely with the Health Department to develop a central location for translated resources which can be accessed through the COVID-19 main website. Information will also be uploaded to MIMA’s website

Lastly, MIMA will be providing multilingual biweekly updates with information regarding services and resources impacted by COVID-19. (Please note that the updates will now be sent every other week as opposed to weekly.) The English version of this week's update is below.

MIMA welcomes Charlie Nguyen!

Charlie

Charlie is a fourth-year student at Johns Hopkins University studying public health and economics. Coming from a largely immigrant community in California (the largest concentration of Vietnamese people outside of Vietnam!) and as a child of refugees, Charlie is interested in immigrant well-being and civic engagement. During his time as a Volunteer Program Coordinator, he hopes to help MIMA strengthen and implement its volunteer program, adapting it to be better equipped for long-term needs. Along the way, he is excited to learn more about how MIMA works with community partners to serve Baltimore's immigrant communities. We are so excited to have Charlie on the MIMA team!

Community Spotlight:

Breath of God Lutheran Church

Breath of God Groceries

Breath of God Lutheran Church in Highlandtown has been part of the pandemic-related food response efforts in Southeast Baltimore since March 18th. When it was announced that schools were closing, they were immediately concerned for the wellbeing of children and their families here in the neighborhood, as so many of them depend on the daily meals and the other food support available at schools. As a longstanding participant in the Summer Food Service Program, they were familiar with the regulations and protocols involved in the work, and had a track record with the necessary agencies. In addition to food for children, they also cooked hot breakfast and lunch each day for adults. Over a few weeks they built up to  630 meals and 210 snacks per day for children, and 200 meals per day for adults, Monday through Friday. In addition to that, they were able to add 150 produce boxes from the city and around 150 bags of groceries donated from Amazon each week.
