PRESS RELEASE

Mayor provides update on Peaceful Youth-led Protest

BALTIMORE, MD.  —  On Monday and into Tuesday, more than 1,000 protesters, who were organized and led primarily by young people, marched through the streets of downtown Baltimore in solidarity with protesters in Minneapolis, who have demanded justice for Mr. George Floyd, a black man killed in police custody. The protest, which began Monday around 3 p.m., and lasted until the early morning hours of Tuesday, were mainly peaceful. Police arrested six adults throughout the evening.

Mayor Young issued the following statement:

“I want to thank the residents of our City for peacefully exercising their rights to protest and demand justice under the law,” Mayor Young said. We witnessed a powerful display of Democracy as more than a thousand people took to the streets of Baltimore without any major incidents. In addition to the brave men and women of the Baltimore Police Department, we witnessed several examples of local activists, who risked their personal safety to help maintain peace and calm during tense moments when a few agitators sought to cause trouble. They are true heroes who love Baltimore. Over the course of the past four days, the City of Baltimore has made the nation proud, while pursuing justice and equal treatment under the law.”
