Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young and Department of Recreation & Parks Create New Initiative to Promote Older Adults Staying Active at Home

New Chat & Chew series offers solution for seniors looking to stay active while sheltering at home

BALTIMORE, MD.  — Today, Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young and the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks (BCRP) Executive Director, Reginald Moore, announced the launch of Chat & Chew: Free Virtual and Call-in Senior Classes. Mayor Young issued the following statement:

“It is important that we continue to provide ways to keep our older adults active and engaged, especially during this stressful time,” Mayor Young said. “The goal of the Chat & Chew virtual series is to help alleviate some of the stress while also motivating our older adult community to stay physically and mentally healthy.”

Beginning May 19, Baltimore seniors are encouraged to participate in senior-friendly health and wellness courses or experience the arts with music provided by the Lyric Opera House, art classes with Art With a Heart, and much more. By dialing in or joining via the web, participants are able to enjoy a workout and connect with peers from the comfort of their homes. The new virtual series is an extension of BCRP’s Virtual Rec Center.

The Chat & Chew: Free Virtual and Call-in Senior Classes are available every Tuesday at 11:30am from May 19 through July 7. Offered course include:

  • May 19 - Chair Yoga
  • May 26 - Music with the Lyric Opera House
  • June 2 - Book Talk with Enoch Pratt Free Library
  • June 9 - Art Class with Art With a Heart

“Baltimore City Recreation and Parks has a very dedicated and engaged senior community, so it is very important that we foster ways to remain connected with them during this time of social distancing,” Executive Director Moore said. “I am thankful to partners like the Enoch Pratt Free Library, the Lyric Opera House, Art With a Heart, and the BCRP staff for continuing to lend their time and expertise to helping us grow our services.”

Baltimore City Recreation and Parks’ Virtual Rec Center provides an array of activities from at-home workouts, art and nature projects, STEM lessons, outdoor activities like gardening or bird watching, and much more. The digital resource page provides safe, alternative recreation options for residents of all ages and abilities
