Mayor Young's Statement on Recent Traffic Incidents Across Baltimore City
BALTIMORE, MD. — “I am saddened by the pedestrian-involved traffic incidents that have occurred over the past week. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the pedestrians involved in these recent accidents. At this time, we cannot provide additional information on these specific incidents as they remain subject to open investigations. I have been in contact with the Baltimore Police Department leadership about these incidents and am confident that they are being fully investigated. I have also urged the Department of Transportation to continue to engage in its efforts to improve pedestrian safety.
“Going forward, we will continue to build on Baltimore’s progress by investing in policies such as the Complete Streets legislation that will help improve safety measures across our transportation infrastructure. In recent years we have implemented a number of policies that helped reduce traffic fatalities and pedestrian deaths. Traffic fatalities in 2018 decreased by 23% compared to 2017 and represented the fewest traffic-related fatalities since 2014. In 2018, the City of Baltimore saw the lowest number of pedestrian fatalities since 2012 — a 42% reduction in pedestrian fatalities in 2018 compared to 2017. Although fatalities and traffic accidents have decreased, we must do more. Pedestrian-involved traffic accidents must stop. I urge all motorists to slow down and be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists that share the road.”
