Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young and Department of Transportation Director Steve Sharkey Announce the Youth Snow Program
Program engages youth to shovel snow for senior and disabled city residents during the winter months
BALTIMORE, MD (October 16, 2019) – Today, Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young and Department of Transportation Director Steve Sharkey announced that the City of Baltimore will be implementing its Youth Snow Program again this winter, and registration is now underway for seniors and youth workers interested in this initiative.
“As Mayor of Baltimore City, I am fully committed to expanding opportunities for our young people,” said Mayor Young. “Now in its 5th year, the Youth Snow Program is designed to bridge the gap between elderly residents, the disabled and young people while providing opportunities for students to give back to their communities and earn a much needed paycheck.”
The Youth Snow Program will assist senior residents, as well as people with disabilities, with snow shoveling service this winter and create employment opportunities for city youth. Through this initiative, student workers are matched with elderly or disabled residents in their neighborhoods who need help removing snow from the public right of ways surrounding their homes. The youth workers will assist residents during the winter months by clearing snow from their assigned locations after a storm. Students work on days when schools are either closed or cancelled, and earn a stipend for their efforts.
“As we prepare for the upcoming winter season, this initiative allows us to expand city services for senior and disabled residents while creating much needed opportunities for Baltimore’s young people,” said Director Sharkey. “This initiative helps to ensure that our youth are productively engaged, gainfully employed, and giving back to their communities.”
City youth between the ages of 14 and 21 must meet certain criteria and provide necessary documentation in order to be eligible for the program. Student registration is now underway and interested youth should call 311 for information. Youth registration closes on December 15, 2019.
City residents who are 65 or older, legally disabled and physically incapable of shoveling snow can also apply for the program by calling 311 for an application. Residents must submit completed registration materials by November 15, 2019 in order to be considered for this initiative. The program is based on a first come, first served basis and residents who complete the registration process should be aware that service is not guaranteed, as it is based on having registered youth workers available in their neighborhoods.
The goal of the Youth Snow Program is to help elderly and disabled residents while providing job opportunities for city youth this winter. The Department of Transportation encourages everyone to register early and submit completed application materials for a successful program this winter.
