Baltimore City Department of Planning eNewsletter  -  July 2019

A Message from Chris Ryer, Director

Chris Ryer

This summer, four interns from Maryland and beyond have joined our team to work on efforts related to resiliency, GIS mapping, climate, and food waste reduction. We are excited to have them join us, and you can read a bit more about their backgrounds below.

Moving ahead to next year, we would like to formalize our internship program and make it easier for students, especially those with Baltimore roots, to apply for opportunities with our Agency. Over the coming months, a working group, composed of Equity Committee members and other staff, will be meet to generate ideas around internships and other professional development opportunities. Our Equity Action plan recommends developing a strategy around diversity in the field of planning, and this year we will be renewing our commitment to this goal.

If you have ideas or suggestions, please don't hesitate to share them with our staff!

Have a great long weekend!,

Chris Ryer, Director

Veterans Partner with INSPIRE Program to Improve Farring-Baybrook Park

Farring Baybrook

For The Mission Continues' fourth Mass Deployment, over 85 veterans deployed from 24 states—plus Washington DC and Puerto Rico—to the Baltimore neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Curtis Bay, and Harlem Part West to serve as part of Operation Charm City Charge. The veteran volunteers teamed up community partners, including the Department of Planning INSPIRE program, for service projects in Harlem Park West, Farring-Baybrook Park, Benjamin Franklin High School, Garrett Park and the Brooklyn O’Malley Boys & Girls Club, and the City of Refuge. In total, volunteers with The Mission Continues contributed over 6,500 hours of service to these communities.

In Farring-Baybrook park, the group built and cleaned up walking pathways connecting local youth walking to the new 21st Century school in the community. This project kicked off the implementation phase of the INSPIRE plan in the neighborhood adjacent to Bay Brook ES/MS. One of the other projects turned a trash-filled alley into a community garden. For more photos from the project, check out this Baltimore Sun photo collection.
