CHIEF'S CORNER

Preparing the remarks for the first quarter of 2019, presented me with the opportunity to reflect back to 2014, when I became the Fire Chief for the Baltimore City Fire Department. During my five-year tenure, I have seen tremendous progress made within the department from all of our members; both sworn and civilian. I have had the pleasure of working with some of the most dedicated, talented, driven, knowledgeable members – which, I believe, has made the department what it is today. Moreover, I continue to be in awe of the department’s rich history; past, present and future.

In January, I had the pleasure of welcoming 27 EMT Recruits in to the Baltimore City Fire Department. They each completed months of intense training that prepared them to serve the citizens of Baltimore and has now entered one of the most rewarding careers.

Unfortunately, February brought immense sadness and sorrow within the department as the entire department mourned the loss of EMT/FF Andrew J. Douglass, 33, an eight-year veteran stationed at Engine 21. During the time of his passing, EMT/FF Douglass was at home in York, Pa. surrounded by his by family and friends. Then, in March, Peter J. O'Connor Jr., retired Chief of the Baltimore City Fire Department passed away at the age of 86. Chief O'Connor joined the fire department in 1954 and was recognized within the department for his continuous dedication and someone who loved the fire service. He was the longest tenure as Fire Chief in the City of Baltimore.

This quarter has also offered new opportunities, as BCFD and the City of Baltimore partnered with IncentaHealth to offer a free weight management program to encourage a healthier lifestyle and to improve overall well-being. There are 32 locations throughout Baltimore City; including six fire stations -  equipped with Kiosk's - that can help the community reach their maximum health and wellness goals. As an agency, work hard to meet the public safety needs of the community and to educate the public on fire prevention and safety. For a second year, we are gearing up to kick-off Camp Spark! This year, Camp Spark is being held on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30 and will educate girls aged 12-16 on career opportunities within the fire service. Applications are now being accepted for the free two-day camp.

As we transition into the second quarter of 2019, I am extremely optimistic that this will be a great time for the Baltimore City Fire Department. The hard work and dedication that each member embodies is truly admirable. I am constantly amazed at the valor put forth by our members and I’m honored to be a part of this great organization. Through this newsletter, I hope you will attain deeper insights into the events that have taken place throughout the year. As always, The Baltimore City Fire Department will continue having “Pride Protecting People.”

Your brother in service to the City of Baltimore,

Fire Chief Niles R. Ford, PhD
