Keeping Citizens Informed As We Move Baltimore Forward | January 15, 2019
Happy 90th Birthday to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
See Mayor Catherine E. Pugh's keynote address at the 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast at Morgan State University.
Latrobe Park Field House Ribbon Cutting
I was joined by students from Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle School to cut the ribbon on the new Latrobe Park Field House. The Latrobe Park Field House is a 1,665 sq. ft. and will be located directly behind Banner Field, taking the place of a former bath house that was constructed around 1904 and demolished in 2014. The $900,000 field house, which is funded by Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, will include men’s and women’s bathrooms, storage, and an elevated stage for concerts and events at Latrobe Park. Baltimore City Recreation and Parks worked with Locust Point Civic Association on the project.
Jack Kemp Foundation Forum on Opportunity Zones
Mayor Catherine E. Pugh delivers remarks at the Jack Kemp Foundation Forum on Opportunity Zones at the City Garage in Port Covington. Seated to the left is Jimmy Kemp, President of the Jack Kemp Foundation.
This forum was intended to raise awareness and promote the benefits of Opportunity Zones for investors and communities in Maryland and nationwide. The focus was on the investor side, providing information to individual investors, family offices, and institutions on how to do successful and impactful Opportunity Zone investing.
Women's Commission First Quarterly Meeting
I had the privilege of addressing the Women’s Commission at their quarterly meeting. Since it’s resurrection, this group has worked diligently to formalize their mission and objective and I am immensely proud of their work. Definitive plans are in progress for 2019 to meet the unique needs of the women of Baltimore City. If you are interested in joining, please email women@baltimorecity.gov.
Opening Session for the Maryland General Assembly
Mayor Catherine E. Pugh enjoys the first day of session at the State House with newly elected Howard County Executive Calvin B. Ball (left) and MD Attorney General Brian E. Frosh (right).
Each January brings with it the beginning of a new legislative session for the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis and renewed optimism for our legislative priorities for Baltimore City. Maryland’s legislative session is beginning with 60 new lawmakers in the 188-member General Assembly. This legislative session my office of Government Relations will be focused on education, healthcare, public safety, youth opportunities and community and economic development.
Weekly Community VRI Walk
Last week, we gathered in the Middle East neighborhood for our weekly continued Violence Reduction Initiative (VRI) community walk. We know that this approach works - providing concentrated focus of City agencies and police, combined with solutions in real time to deal with the conditions tha contribute to violence and crime. In 2018 violent crime was down a total of 24% in our designated VRI zones. We are intent on making even greater progress throughout 2019.
Walbrook Mill Redevelopment
Mayor Catherine E. Pugh is joined by Delegate Keith Haynes (far left), Senator Shirley Nathan-Pulliam (second from left), Governor Larry Hogan (left), Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford (right), Senator Bill Ferguson (fourth from right), Councilman Leon Pinkett (third from right), MD Secretary of Commerce Kelly Schulz (second from right), MD Secretary of Housing & Community Development Kenneth Holt (far right) at the future site of the Walbrook Mill development.
I was so happy to join Governor Hogan to announce this major redevelopment coming to the heart of West Baltimore. The Walbrook Mill project itself is a $26 million development to revitalize a former lumber mill into apartments, retail and maker space adjacent to Coppin State. State University. In Baltimore, we are poised to be the leading city in the nation on Opportunity Zones. We have 42 of the state’s 149 Zones or 28% and they are strategically located in areas of the city that are poised for growth and for creating opportunities for our local residents and businesses. I recently hired a dedicated Opportunity Zones Coordinator for the City of Baltimore who is focused on working with the community, developers, and businesses to promote our Opportunity Zone projects and match up investment opportunities with Opportunity Zone investors locally, regionally, and nationally.
The Baltimore Symphony Musicians Give Back
I was so honored to join with our extraordinary musicians of the Baltimore Symphony Orchstra for a special concert at Baltimore’s historic Basilica of the National Shrine to benefit My Sister’s Place - a vital resource center for women and children with too few options and in need of care and protection. The musicians devoted their time and talents and were joined by musicians from the National Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Semper Fi Brass Ensemble. Our world-renowned BSO continues to make a difference in so many ways through their music and by giving of themselves! Thank you BSO Musicians!
And a very special thank you to the hard working city employees at the Department of Public Works for the fantastic job they did clearing our neighborhoods and roadways after the first snow of the year! Thank you from all of Baltimore!
