Make a Resolution to Recycle

Looking for an easy but impactful New Year's resolution? Consider making a resolution to recycle! Half of our household trash can be recycled. Placing your paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal in your recycling bin makes trash collection day more manageable, conserves natural resources, and reduces the amount of waste we send to the landfill.

Recycling in Baltimore is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

1. Find out your collection day: All residential addresses in the City are already on a recycling route. Find out your collection day by visiting CityView, or calling 311. Place recycling outside where your trash is collected by 6 a.m. on your collection day. If recycling is not collected by 4:00 p.m. please call 311. Businesses can call the DPW Office of Recycling to be added to a recycling route; (410) 396-4511.

2. Choose your containers: You can use any labeled container to hold your recycling, except for plastic bags! If you would like a sticker to label a container such as an old trash can, storage tote or laundry basket, call (410) 396-4511 to request one. Cardboard boxes or paper bags are also accepted containers for recycling.

Where can I buy a yellow recycling container?

3. Fill your container with recyclables! Baltimore City accepts all types and colors of paper, plastic bottles, jugs, and jars, glass bottles and jars, cardboard, and aluminum and metal cans. Visit our website for a complete list of what you can and cannot recycle.

Already recycling but still in need of a resolution?

Try to reduce your waste! Making small changes throughout the year can help reduce the amount you put into the waste stream. Here are some of our favorite ways to reduce the waste we make:

  • Carry a reusable water bottle
  • Bring your own travel cup when buying coffee
  • Refuse plastic bags at the store
  • Buy items in bulk to reduce packaging

Leftover Recycling From the Holidays?

idk

Please keep the following items you may have leftover from your Holiday celebrations out of your recycling bin:

  • Holiday lights
  • Electronics
  • Broken ornaments/ other decor
  • Cookware and dishes (including disposable)
  • Clothing and other fabric
  • Batteries
  • Bubble wrap
  • Foam peanuts

Some of these items can be recycled, just not curbside! Please take any electronics to one of our Convenience Centers. Textiles in good condition should be donated; if they are not in wearable condition, please try another recycling option, including Planet Aid boxes, H&M, and MOM's Organic Market. Batteries can be taken to most hardware stores for recycling. Bubble wrap can be recycled with plastic bags and other plastic film at many grocery stores. Foam peanuts can be taken to most shipping stores to be reused.

Did you run out of space in your bins? You can use any labeled container, paper bags, and cardboard boxes!

If you would like a sticker to label your containers, please call us at (410) 396-4511 and we will mail one to you!
