This is Plastic. I Can Recycle it, Right?

Not all plastic is created equal!  Here is a list of the plastic items to keep out of your recycling container, and placed in your trash can or brought to one of DPW’s drop-off locations to be recycled:

Plastic bags and plastic wrap. These items can be taken to grocery stores to be recycled. This plastic jams sorting equipment at the recycling facility, making recycling less efficient. To find a location near you, please visit plasticfilmrecycling.org.

Rigid Plastics: laundry baskets, milk crates, or plastic toys. These items can be recycled at most DPW drop-off convenience centers (click here to see centers 1-5). Such items are often too large to be sorted in single stream recycling, and require a different recycling process.

Food wrappers: chip bags and candy wrappers. These items are made up of different types of plastic, making them very difficult to be recycled. Some companies, such as Terracycle, offer recycling options for these items, for a cost.

Garden hoses, shoes, and umbrellas. These items have plastic parts, but separating and recycling them is difficult.

Remember, when in doubt, throw it out! Consult our single stream recycling guide and our FAQs or call the DPW Recycling Office at (410) 396-4511.

DPW Bureau of Solid Waste Youth Workers

YW

For five weeks this summer, the DPW Bureau of Solid Waste employed 10 summer employees through the YouthWorks program. These young workers gained valuable hands-on work experience. They learned what happens to your trash and recycling once DPW collects it, and why we need to generate less waste. You may have seen our youth workers and some of their work around town! They kept busy painting boards to be put on vacant homes, passing out Clean City Guides, planning and working a recycling bin sale, and helping at the DPW Artscape booth. In addition to the youth workers assigned to the Bureau of Solid Waste, DPW hired some 100 YouthWorks employees who had assignments in nearly every division of the agency.
