MIMA just launched a Facebook page, so please like, follow, & share! The new page will allow MIMA to share relevant information more quickly with New American communities in Baltimore & beyond. MIMA’s monthly newsletter will continue, but watch for additional stories and updates via our Facebook page.

While you’re checking out our new site, you may notice that MIMA has undergone a name change. The name has been shortened to the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. The new name will allow for better communication with Baltimore’s limited English proficient population. Don’t worry – the acronym is still MIMA (Mayor’s Office of IMmigrant Affairs).

We are so glad to have you as part of our MIMA community, and we hope you will help us grow our reach through Facebook!

Snapshot of Our Community: #MyBmoreLatino

MyBmore Latino

#MyBmoreLatino made its debut at the 38th annual LatinoFest in Patterson Park, highlighting the diverse and rich culture of Baltimore’s Hispanic community.  Individuals from all backgrounds stopped at the Visit BaltimoreDescubre & Disfruta” (Discover & Enjoy) booth, which highlighted museums, events and neighborhoods that make Baltimore one of the “10 Coolest U.S. Cities to Visit in 2018,”as per Forbes Magazine.  The #MyBmoreLatino campaign showcases the sights to be enjoyed as a local or a visitor. #MyBmoreLatino is engaging the growing Latino community that contributes tremendously to Baltimore’s economy and tourism, while also communicating an intentional open-door message to Latinos in the region.

#MyBmore and #MyBmoreLatino together capture the narrative of OUR Baltimore, from Fort McHenry, to Hampden, to Camden Yards, to LatinoFest. This is the joy, richness, and history that is Baltimore. Come see the Baltimore you are missing.

National Happenings: Mayor Pugh Condemns Separation of Families at the Border

On June 19th, Mayor Pugh issued a statement condemning the arbitrary practice of separating families fleeing violence at the U.S. southern border. Since then, President Trump has issued an executive order to stop family separation at the U.S. southern border. Nonetheless, thousands of children remain separated from their families, many whom have been transferred to Maryland. The following list provides alternatives to help children and their families at a national and local level.

National

  • RAICES is the largest immigration nonprofit in Texas offering free and low cost legal services to immigrant children and families.
  • CARA is a consortium of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, the American Immigration Council, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Together, they provide legal services at family detention centers.

Local Organizations

  • CAIR Coalition Detained Children’s Program provides legal services to children detained by the Office of Refuge Resettlement at juvenile facilities and shelters in Maryland and Virginia.
  • The Esperanza Center, a program of Catholic Charities of Baltimore, provides a range of services to unaccompanied children and their families in Maryland.
  • Kids in Need of Defense works to ensure that kids do not appear in immigration court without representation, and lobbies for policies that advocate for children’s legal interests.
  • CASA litigates on behalf of, advocates for, and supports immigrant families in Maryland.
  • Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland (PBRC) runs the Unaccompanied Children Pro Bono Project, which provides legal assistance to immigrant children in Maryland.
  • Volunteer Opportunities (courtesy of PBRC)
