What is “Wishcycling” and how can you avoid it?

We’ve all been there: we have an odd item we want to get rid of and are not sure what to do with it. We consider the options of trash can and recycling bin. We think, “well, it’s plastic, and plastic is recyclable,” so we place it in our recycling bin. On collection day, the crew takes it, so it must have been recyclable. Or so we wish.

Many items we place in our recycling bins are not recyclable, and they make recycling less efficient and more costly. Some of the most common offenders of wishcycling are plastic cutlery, plastic straws, plastic clamshell food containers, napkins and paper towels, Styrofoam, and plastic bags. These items should all be placed in the trash, with the exception of plastic bags. Plastic bags can be brought to your grocery store to be recycled. Other commonly “wishcycled” items include clothing and shoes, garden hoses, and electronics. These should never go in your recycling bin.

Many items can be recycled, just not in single stream recycling programs. Please see below for a list of items that can be recycled at our convenience centers. The easiest way to avoid wishcycling is to keep it simple. Stick to the basics when placing items in your single stream container. Plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass bottles, paper, cardboard, and plastic wide-mouth containers. Check out our online recycling guide for a longer list. When in doubt, throw it out!
