Hispanic Commission

Last month, Mayor Pugh met with the newly appointed members of the Baltimore City Hispanic Commission to discuss needs and opportunities for Baltimore’s Latinx Community. During the meeting, Mayor Pugh shared her vision to move Baltimore forward by investing in youth and education, neighborhood development and jobs, public safety, and quality of life. Commissioners praised the mayor for her efforts to provide Baltimore’s youth access to higher education, regardless of country of origin, through opportunities like the Mayor’s Scholars program. They also lauded her commitment to due process to protect families in Baltimore, a city of welcoming & inclusion.  For more information regarding the Hispanic Commission please contact hispanic.commission@baltimorecity.gov or visit https://hc.baltimorecity.gov

National Happenings: Liberia Deferred Enforced Departure

Dept of Homeland Security

On March 27, President Trump announced the end of Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status for thousands of Liberians living in the U.S. Liberians were granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in 1999 due to conditions related to Liberia’s civil war that displaced 800,000 people. President Bush converted Liberians’ TPS to DED in 2007, and DED has been renewed for Liberia every 18 months since that time. DED will officially end on March 31, 2019. Employment Authorization for DED recipients that bears a March 31, 2018 expiration date will be automatically extended until September 30, 2018.

Approximately 1,600 Liberians reside in Baltimore City & the surrounding county (ACS 5-year estimates, 2016). Affected community members should seek other forms of relief as recommended by an immigration attorney. Information on local legal assistance is available in MIMA’s Welcome Guide or through AILA’s Immigration Lawyer Search. Read the full text of the President’s memo here.
