Step Up Your Recycling Routine This Spring

Spring is near! The first day of spring is Tuesday, March 20

The arrival of spring means warmer, wetter, and windier weather! The following tips will help make sure your recycling container withstands the March winds and April showers:

  • Choose a recycling bin with a lid; this helps your recyclables stay dry and inside the bin instead of blowing around your alley.
  • Set out recycling on the morning of your collection, on particularly windy or rainy days.  Just be sure to have it out by 6 a.m.
  • Place heavier items, like bottles and jars, on top of lighter items that are more likely to blow away, like paper and mail.
  • Bundle newspapers and other papers with a string to prevent them from blowing around.
  • Place shredded paper in a paper bag, and close the top by rolling it tightly or even stapling it.

Following these simple tips will help keep your yard, alley, and community cleaner, and ensure that your recyclables stay in their proper containers.

Don’t Just Wear Green, Be Green!

St. Patrick’s Day is not just an occasion to wear green; it is a time to be green: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Reduce waste by not buying one-time use decorations; only purchase items you will use more than just this year.

Reuse old green clothing you already have, instead of buying a new green shirt you’ll wear just once.

Recycle those celebratory bottles, cans, and plastic cups by placing them in a recycling container instead of a trash can.

Recycling FAQ

Do I need a yellow recycling bin to recycle in Baltimore?

Nope! You do NOT need a yellow bin to recycle. Any container that is not a plastic bag is acceptable! Old trash cans, storage totes, laundry baskets, and even cardboard boxes and paper bags are perfect, just be sure to label them “recycling."

If you would like a free recycling sticker to label your container, contact the DPW Recycling Office at (410) 396-4511, and we will mail you one!
