New stations will extend bike transit/commute options for citizens
BALTIMORE, MD (December 20, 2017) The Baltimore City Department of Transportation today announced that new bike share stations will soon begin operations as part of the Baltimore Bike Share program.
“We are very excited to expand the Bike Share program to provide more location options for riders” says Michelle Pourciau, Director of Baltimore City Department of Transportation “Baltimore Bike Share is an affordable, healthy and sustainable addition to the city’s existing transportation options.”
As part of the scheduled program expansion, nine newly installed bike share stations will soon be available for citizens to use. Starting on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 bike share stations will be operational at the following locations:
- The Charles Center Metro stop (downtown)
- Ostend and Light Streets (Federal Hill)
Over the next few weeks the following stations will gradually open as power is turned on at the locations:
- Betty Hyatt Park (Jonestown)
- Charles Street and Fort Avenue (South Baltimore)
- Eastern Avenue and Potomac Street (East Baltimore)

- Varsity on Biddle Apartments (Mount Vernon)
- Chase and St. Paul Streets (Mount Vernon)
- North and Maryland Avenues (Station North)
The Baltimore Bike Share program provides citizens with convenient, on-demand access to bicycles for short distance trips in the city. Similar to car sharing programs, Bike Share has become an effective mode of transportation for quick, point to point trips in urban areas. Bike sharing differs from typical bike rental programs because it is designed for quick trips with high turnover rates, and often complements other forms of public transportation.
Baltimore’s program includes both standard and electric bikes, making it the largest electric bike share fleet in largest electric bike share fleet in the Western Hemisphere. ‘Pedelec’ bikes are integrated with small electric motors that automatically assist the rider when pedaled. These bikes use rechargeable batteries and travel at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour.
Baltimore Bike Share recently celebrated its one year anniversary and has received tremendous support from businesses, organizations and biking advocates. With nearly 1,800 active users, Baltimore Bike Share is quickly approaching its 40,000th trip. The addition of these new stations will help to provide citizens with new transit choices
The Department of Transportation looks forward to completing a successful first year of the bike share program and improving service for the citizens of Baltimore.
