Mayor Catherine Pugh Stands in support of DACA

On September 5th, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Trump administration’s decision to rescind DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). DACA protects from deportation and provides legal work authorization to almost 800,000 people nationally, including thousands of people in Maryland.

As home to many beneficiaries of the DACA program, it is critical that our residents in Baltimore know the new rules. If your DACA protection expires on or before March 5, 2018, your renewal application MUST be received by immigration on or before October 5, 2017.

Check out our bilingual (English/Español) video with information regarding organizations assisting DACA beneficiaries in Baltimore City. #WithDACA #LC4DACA

Partner Spotlight: Puerto Rico and Mexico Disaster Relief

This month we are featuring partners and organizations supporting the victims of Puerto Rico and Mexico. Please see below for more details.

During the month of September, the island of Puerto Rico suffered two major hurricanes in the space of two weeks. Hurricane Irma, a Category 4, resulted in an estimated four deaths on the island and over half of the population without power. The island was in the recovery process when the threat of another hurricane appeared on the radar. Hurricane Maria hit land Wednesday, September 20th, leaving Puerto Rico without electricity, flash floods, devastated communities, and very limited resources. Hurricane Maria was one of the most powerful storms the island has seen in over a century, requiring immediate and long-term support. Below we have included a list of charities committed to providing relief to the island.

Mexico has also been a victim of devastating natural disasters in a short time span. In one month, Mexico experienced two earthquakes of distressing magnitudes. The first earthquake struck the southern coast of the country on September 8th as a magnitude 8.1. The second quake followed on September 19th, as a 7.1 earthquake just miles outside of Mexico City. These catastrophic earthquakes resulted in over 370 total deaths and countless damaged and collapsed buildings and homes. Below is a list of charities committed to providing relief to Mexico.

National Happenings: Travel Ban 3.0: The White House issues new travel ban

A new travel ban has been ordered by President Trump, replacing the existing one. This new order (issued as a presidential “proclamation”) applies varying travel restrictions on individuals from eight countries: Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Somalia. Five of those countries were included in the previous version of the President’s travel ban (Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia), and the other three are new additions. Sudan was included in the previous travel ban but has been removed from the list. More information
