MEDIA RELEASE

Councilman Robert Stokes Joins the Baltimore City Fire Department For a Citywide B’More Safe Smoke Alarm Sweep

Thursday, June 22, 2017 – (Baltimore, MD) – In light of the recent house fires that claimed the life of an elderly man in East Baltimore and an elderly man in Southeast Baltimore, Chief Niles Ford, Councilman Robert Stokes (District 12) and members of the Baltimore City Fire Department will hold a Citywide B’More Safe Smoke Alarm Sweep to bring awareness to city residents about fire safety and install free smoke alarms.

On Saturday, June 24 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., members of the fire department will disperse themselves within the community to increase the public’s awareness about fire safety and the importance of having working smoke alarms on every level of their home.

“In an effort to bring awareness to fire safety, canvassing the community will continue to increase residents survival and awareness," said Chief Ford. "The plan is to have all residents B'More Safe and consider the necessary improvements to equip their homes with these life-saving resources.”

During the B’More Safe Smoke Alarm Sweep, residents will have the opportunity to receive free 10-year lithium tamper resistant smoke alarms in their homes. If someone is not home during the sweep, residents are encouraged to dial 311 to request a free smoke alarm and a firefighter will arrive within two hours.

“We are taking strides to educate all city residents about the overall importance of smoke alarms,” said Chief Ford.

So far this year there have been 19 fire fatalities in Baltimore City.

Note to Media: The official launch of the event will kick-off 321 E. 22nd Street at 11:30 a.m.
