MEDIA RELEASE

Cause Released in the 2-Alarm Lanvale Towers Fire

May 12, 2017 – (Baltimore, MD) On April 16, the Baltimore City Fire Department responded to a 2-alarm fire at Lanvale Towers; located at 1300 E. Lanvale Street. Upon arrival units faced an eight-story high-rise apartment complex with heavy smoke and fire showing from the eighth floor with extension through the roof.

The investigation has been concluded and it was determined that the fire was caused by an improperly discarded cigarette material inside of the eighth floor trash shoot.

“It was unfortunate that the residents of Lanvale Towers were without a place to stay,” said Chief Niles R. Ford. “Fortunately, no one was injured and everyone was able to escape safely.”

The fire resulted in more than 170 residents being displaced from the East Baltimore high-rise.

Baltimore Housing, The American Red Cross and building management worked with residents to find temporary shelter and provided other resources for those who needed it.
