PRESS RELEASE
City Councilman Kristerfer Burnett Joins Chief Niles Ford and members of the Baltimore City Fire Department for Citywide Canvass to Reinforce Fire Safety and Install Free Smoke Alarms
March 23, 2017 – (Baltimore, MD) – In response to the
fatal fire at Kozy Kottage (an assisted living facility) that claimed the lives
of four and critically injured two others on March 3 and the double fatal fire in the 1200 block of Greenmount Ave. on March 18, Baltimore City firefighters will comb through
city neighborhoods to discuss fire safety and to install free smoke alarms.
The citywide effort will
take place on Saturday, March 25 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Firefighters across the City will visit hundreds of homes this Saturday to
engage in conversations related to fire safety and evacuation plans, in
addition to installing free smoke alarms where needed.
“The smoke alarm sweeps
are designed to spark conversations with members of the community about fire safety
improvements in their homes,” said Chief Niles Ford. “As an agency, we are
committed to doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our residents.”
During the smoke alarm sweep, residents will have the opportunity to receive free
10-year lithium tamper resistant smoke alarms in their homes. If someone is not
home during the sweep, residents are encouraged to dial 311 to request a free
smoke alarm and a firefighter will arrive within two hours.
So far this year there
have been 15 fire fatalities in Baltimore City.
Note to Media: The
official launch of the event will kick-off at 2807 Lawina Rd., at 11:30 a.m. with Chief Niles Ford and Councilman Kristerfer Burnett.
