PRESS RELEASE

Chief Niles Ford and Members of the Baltimore City Fire Department to Hold Neighborhood Smoke Alarm Sweep to Bolster Home Fire Safety

March 1, 2017 – (Baltimore, MD) – In light of two recent house fires that claimed the lives of two city residents, (4600 block of Pall Mall Rd., one adult male and 1900 block of Edmondson Ave., one adult female) Baltimore City firefighters will take part in a citywide smoke alarm sweep on Saturday, March 4, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. to remind residents about protecting their home from a fire.

Firefighters will canvass neighborhood by neighborhood to talk with residents about keeping their homes safe and installing free 10-year lithium tamper resistant smoke alarms wherever needed.

“All homes are required to have a working smoke alarm on every level,” said Chief Ford. “When we canvass communities, not only are we making sure residents have working smoke alarms, we are ensuring they are knowledgeable about evacuation plans and life-saving tips in case they are faced with a fire in their home.”

So far this year there have been nine fire fatalities in Baltimore City.

As Mayor Catherine E. Pugh said during a January press conference with the Baltimore City Fire Department, “Dial 311 to get one,” to remind residents to call 311 to request a free smoke alarm.

Note to Media: The official launch of the event will kick-off at 1937 Edmondson Ave., at 11:30 a.m.
