Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

This month, MIMA was thrilled to participate in the Mayor’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Reception, organized by the Baltimore Kawasaki and Xiamen Sister City Committees.

The reception honored the longstanding contributions of Baltimore’s Asian American and Pacific Islander community. During the ceremony, MIMA presented a Certificate of Recognition to Andy Brizzolara for his 28 years of volunteer service to the City of Baltimore and the City of Xiamen and for his efforts to further the mission of Sister Cities International and the promotion of “peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation - one individual, one community at a time."

Snapshot of our Community: Baltimore Immigration Museum

Immigration Museum

Baltimore’s first Immigration Museum opened its doors this month!

Located in a building that was originally used by immigrants in need of temporary housing between 1904 and 1914, the Baltimore Immigration Museum chronicles the history of the Great Wave of Immigration between the 19th and 20th century and Baltimore’s role as an immigration gateway. The museum specifically tells the story of major ethnic groups who immigrated to Baltimore during this time period, such as the Germans, Irish, Poles, Jews, Lithuanians, Czechs, Italians and Greeks. The museum is also working on efforts to display the current immigration patterns of Hispanic and Asian immigrants into our city, as well as the history of African- American and Southern migration to Baltimore.

For more information regarding the museum, please visit www.immigrationbaltimore.org

Partner Spotlight: Chinese American Doctors Association

Chinese American Doctors

Chinese American Doctors Association (CADA) was founded in Maryland in 2008 and now has a membership of over 100 Chinese American physicians, dentists, and Chinese traditional medicine practitioners who practice in the Greater Baltimore region. The association was created to facilitate the professional development of its members, to promote health care in communities in which the members serve and to facilitate exchange and interaction of medical professionals between the U.S. and China.  One recent example of their work is their development of a Medical Chinese Curriculum for use at the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine.

In 2009, together with a number of Korean American community leaders and Korean American physicians, CADA founded the Asian American Healthcare Center (AAHC) Volunteer Clinic. Since that time, the AAHC Clinic has been providing culturally sensitive and linguistically competent health care to the Asian American community and has served more than 1000 uninsured and low income Asian Americans who live in Baltimore and the surrounding areas.

The Association is open to all physicians, Chinese and non-Chinese, Western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and other health professionals to join. For more information, please contact Dr. Alvin, president, at adzhang2000@yahoo.com.

National Immigrant Month

National Happenings

Did you know that June is Immigrant Heritage Month?

MIMA is excited to join Welcome.us in its 3rd Annual Immigrant Heritage Month, a nationwide effort to gather and share inspiring stories of immigration in America. June celebrates the country’s immigrant heritage: stories of individuals, families and communities who have contributed to the unique social fabric of a country whose greatness is fueled by its diversity. This year, the organization has released the “I am an Immigrant” campaign to create awareness and encourage individuals to explore and celebrate their own heritage and stand in solidarity with New Americans and the new individuals and families arriving to our country every day.

We all have an American Story. What’s yours?  Share your story and encourage your friends and clients to do the same online via the links above and using the hashtags  “ImmigrantHeritageMonth, #IHM2016 and #IAmAnImmigrant.

Hispanic Commission

This month, the members of the Baltimore City Hispanic Commission met with City Councilman Brandon Scott regarding his legislative bill mandating Municipal Identification Cards for Baltimore residents. The legislation was introduced on April 7th and is currently in the Judiciary and Legislative Investigations Committees awaiting review by the pertinent city agencies. Councilman Scott’s proposed legislation is an important step towards the integration and inclusion of immigrant communities currently living in our city.
