BALTIMORE, MD. (September 15, 2011)—Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake issued the following statement to congratulate the faculty and students of Baltimore’s Mount Washington Elementary School for being named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education:

 “Today I was pleased to hear that Mount Washington Elementary School was named a National Blue Ribbon School. As Mayor, and as the parent of a student at Mount Washington, I am proud of the work done every day by the faculty and students. I want to congratulate Principal Sue Torr for her commitment to the students and for making Mount Washington Elementary a superb place for children to learn and grow.

I want to also thank School CEO Dr. Andres Alonso and the members of the School Board for the work they do on behalf of every student in our public schools. I am committed to supporting their efforts to reform our schools and improve student performance every year.

The success of Mount Washington Elementary School is evidence that every young person in Baltimore has potential to achieve great things. Working with the School Board, teachers, parents and community leaders from every neighborhood in the city, we can ensure that all of our children are given the educational opportunities they deserve.”
