(Baltimore, MD, 09/08/11)   Today, the Baltimore Police Foundation, in conjunction with Under Armour and the Baltimore Community Foundation, announced a funding initiative to benefit the men and women of the Baltimore Police Department’s Southern District. The initiative was seeded by $300,000 in gifts from Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank and Police Foundation Chairmen A.B. “Buzzy” Krongard and Jack Luetkemeyer.

The donations, made to the Baltimore Police Foundation Fund of the Baltimore Community Foundation, will be used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment to assist in the fight against violent crime, including:

  • 30 desktop computers to replace outdated equipment in the District.
  • PocketCop service for the Southern District for one year. The PocketCop device enables wireless warrant, criminal history and motor vehicle database checks, allowing officers greater ability to walk foot posts.
  • 9 Motorola Zoom Pads to allow supervisors to monitor the deployment of officers utilizing the GPS capability of the PocketCop Blackberry device.
  • 4 FAST Machines that allow for mobile scanning of fingerprints to provide positive ID of those wanted on a warrant.
  • 8 Police bicycles that will be used as an efficient, environmentally friendly conveyance for officers deployed in community patrols.
  • District Gym Improvements UnderArmour will assist with state of the art gym improvements
  • 20 tasers.

Krongard and Luetkemeyer expressed their hope that other business leaders would follow Kevin Plank’s example in supporting the Police Foundation. The Police Foundation Fund was created to accept private donations to support the Baltimore Police Department's efforts to make Baltimore a safer place to live, work and visit.
