Westwood Wire - July 2023

Westwood Wire Icon

Dear Residents,

In this month's WIRE, the Town continues to seek volunteers to fill board and committee vacancies; the Human Rights Task Force educates us that July is Disability Pride Month; and the Commission on Disability submits its debut article. You’ll also find important information from the Conservation Commission about doing your “doody” to keep our water and public areas clean. Then you can review the Dedham-Westwood Water District’s, 2022 Consumer Confidence Water Quality Report.

From creating “Air Plants” to frolicking in “Fireman’s Foam”, there are many special programs offered for the young and young at heart, hosted by the Recreation Commission and the Council on Aging. As always, our main and branch libraries have multiple, enriching programs for all ages. Equally interesting, a variety of Community Events to peruse from hiking to finding your voice.

Please keep reading for all the details and complete information on this month's happenings in the Westwood WIRE.

Westwood Commission on Disability

k

The Westwood Commission on Disability works collaboratively with other Town offices to assist the Town in complying with state and federal requirements and promotes universal access to community life and activities.

The Commission also has a role as a “watchdog", bringing access issues to the attention of Town as well as state officials. A few years ago, a significant issue at the MBTA Route 128 Amtrak Station came to the attention of the Commission. Passengers with mobility issues arriving in Westwood on an in-bound train had no way to cross the tracks to the station due to a broken elevator. Town officials including the Commission convened a meeting with MBTA and Amtrak officials and worked with state and federal legislative representatives to prioritize equipment repair.

Some of the major projects the Commission participated in include: the 2020 Town Comprehensive Plan, the universal access design review for the new Pine Hill Elementary School, review of access improvements at the School Street Playground, and obtaining a grant to fund an updated ADA Self-evaluation and Transition Plan.

The Commission on Disability typically meets once a month via Zoom webinar.

Westwood Town Clerk

A Thank You Note from Town Clerk Dottie Powers...

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the voters of Westwood for participating in our Annual Town Election and to congratulate all the newly elected town officials.  For those who were not elected, you should be proud of yourselves for your willingness to serve our community and for stepping up as it’s not easy to run for an elective office. We hope you will continue to be involved.  We live in a great community because of all of the people working hard to give their time and talents to make it a wonderful place to live and raise families.

I would like to thank the School Department Facilities Manager and Staff, Town Facilities Manager and Staff, Public Works Department and Staff, for delivery and setup of Election equipment as well as our Police Department for helping with the traffic flow and for ensuring the safety of our Voters and Election workers throughout the Election Day.  It takes many staff members to assist in the preparation and execution of Election Day so that our voters have a great experience.

Many thanks to our dedicated team of Election staff and High School students who assisted on Election Day. We are extremely grateful for their time and talents.
