Memorial Day

Residents,

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Memorial Day Parade is back for 2022! The parade will be held on May 30th starting at 10:00 a.m.

The parade begins at Westwood Town Hall and will proceed down Route 109/High Street to the New Westwood Cemetery where a Memorial Day Ceremony will be held. The ceremony will include recognition of the Grand Marshall, distinguished speakers, live music, and the decoration of graves.

This year's Grand Marshall is Mr. Jim Martin, a long-time Westwood resident who served in the 2nd Marine Division in Vietnam. Other honored guests include our Gold Star Mother, Mrs. Christine Devlin, Westwood Select Board Members, and Local and State Representatives.

The current forecast for May 30th looks promising!

But in the event of inclement weather (rain), the parade will be canceled and the ceremony will be moved to the High School Auditorium. If any of the planned events need to be canceled or changed, the town will send out an update via the Alert Westwood notification system on May 29th.

We hope to see you along High Street and at the New Westwood Cemetery on May 30th, helping us honor those who have lost their lives serving in the U.S. Military protecting our country.

Celebrate - Honor - Remember

Thank you,

Town of Westwood

Annual Election

A message from the Town Clerk, Dottie Powers:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the voters of Westwood for participating in our Annual Town Election.  The efforts you made to go out and vote at our new consolidated polling location in the Gymnasium at Westwood High School were greatly appreciated. The consolidation provided residents the opportunity to vote in a centrally located public facility and also gave neighbors and friends a means to reunite.

I would like to thank the School Department Facilities Manager and Staff, Town Facilities Manager and Staff, Public Works Department and Staff, for the delivery and setup of Election equipment as well as our Police Department for helping with the traffic flow and for ensuring the safety of our Voters and Election workers throughout the Election Day.  It takes many staff members to assist in the preparation and execution of Election Day so that our voters have a great experience.

Many thanks to our dedicated team of Election staff and High School students who assisted on Election day. We are extremely grateful for their time and talents.

We were happy to receive positive feedback from many residents as well as ideas for improvements that we will focus on for future elections. Voting is our greatest privilege and we want the experience for voters in Westwood to be a positive one.

Dottie

Health Hazard Mitigation Plan

Westwood Health Department

Board of Health

Update from the Health Director:

Permits for Public Food Events

The Board of Health protects the general public by promoting safe food handling for public events. Any event where food is sold or given away to the general public requires a temporary food permit from the Board of Health.

Non-profit organizations often use food sales as a way to raise funds for their organization; several factors are evaluated to determine the food safety of these events. No foods for a public event or fundraiser should be made in a home kitchen (except baked goods such as cookies, brownies, or cakes - potluck is exempt from this requirement) A bake sale is the only public event that does not require a temporary food permit.

Food trucks have become popular for one-day social events and they also are required to obtain a Temporary Mobile Food Truck permit. The Health Department is here to answer any questions and assist you with information to clarify when a  food permit is needed, please contact us at health@townhall.westwood.ma.us

Mosquito Control

The Town of Westwood is a member of the Norfolk County Mosquito Control District which provides mosquito control activities. The District conducts monitoring to detect disease, water management to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes in existing drainage swales and systems, larval control to control mosquitoes before they become flying adults, and adult control to manage mosquitoes. Aerial larval applications are conducted over wetlands for nuisance control in the spring. Adult Control (Adulticiding) is conducted from truck-mounted equipment (mosquito spraying) and is conducted on a weekly basis, weather permitting in the evenings after sunset by request only.

Visit the District’s website at www.norfolkcountymosquito.org  for more information.

Westwood Private Well Regulations

Please be advised that this regulation requires that a water quality test be conducted and a copy of the results forwarded to the Board of Health office prior to a change in ownership of the property on which the private well is located. This applies to both drinking water and irrigation wells. Please refer to our website for the Private Well Regulations for more information on the required tests. If you have any questions please call Jared Orsini, Health Director (781) 320-1026.

With a reputation for good food at affordable prices, hungry customers would regularly return for more. The attractive white Colonial Revival restaurants, with eye-catching porcelain tile roofs, illuminated cupolas, and sea blue shutters, were described in "Reader's Digest" in 1949 as the epitome of "eating places that look like New England town meeting houses dressed up for Sunday." Boston historian and author Anthony M. Sammarco recounts how Howard Johnson introduced twenty-eight flavors of ice cream, the "Tendersweet" clam strips, grilled frankfurter, and a menu of delicious and traditional foods that families eagerly enjoyed when they traveled

The band is directed by James Giurleo, former Westwood Public Schools K-12 Director of Performing Arts. Its volunteer membership includes amateur and professional musicians ranging in age between 14 and 80+, who perform FREE concerts to the public. The band's repertoire changes each year and includes pop, TV/movie themes jazz, Broadway, and semi-classical styles that reflect our American culture and trends. Rehearsals are scheduled on six Mondays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Westwood High School band room, starting June 13, 2022.

If you are interested in joining, contact the director or attend the "Open House" rehearsal where any interested musician can just show up and bring their horn or sticks and sit in with no obligation to join.
