A word from the Town Administrator

Residents,

Despite the modifications to the program necessitated by the threat of EEE, Westwood Day 2019 was extremely successful.

To the community, thank you for making Westwood Day an outstanding success by coming out and enjoying the day. We appreciate your support!

To our sponsors and vendors, you are the foundation of our event and we appreciate all you do and all you contribute to make Westwood Day a success year after year!

And finally, to the staff and volunteers of the Town, especially the Recreation Department, Police, Fire, School and DPW, your hard work and dedication to this event is immeasurable.  Thank you for continuing to go above and beyond to make Westwood Day the spectacular community event that it is.

On a separate matter, I’d like to remind everyone that although Westwood’s risk for EEE is categorized as moderate, we strongly suggest that residents continue to use every precaution for evening activities, especially Halloween.

  • Apply insect repellent before venturing out for the evening.
  • Wear long pants, long sleeve shirts or jackets, socks and shoes to minimize your chances of a bite. If costumes are short sleeved, shorts, skirts or dresses consider long sleeve shirts and long pants underneath.
  • Avoid areas with known high mosquito populations such as heavily wooded areas or areas prone to excessive moisture.
  • Limit your time outdoors after dusk to reduce your risk of a bite.

For an update on any change in risk and additional precautions you should visit the board of health's website.

Westwood Board of Health

With Halloween approaching, the Board of Health would like to remind all residents to continue to follow the Massachusetts Department of Public Health recommended guidelines to protect yourselves from mosquito bites while trick-or-treating. The threat for Eastern Equine Encephalitis will remain until at least the first hard frost. A hard frost occurs when the outdoor temperature reaches 28 Degrees Fahrenheit for four or more hours. That being said, for individuals and families planning to trick-or-treat after dusk on Halloween, the following actions are recommended;

We urge everyone venturing out on Halloween to follow these recommendations to reduce their risk of mosquito bites.

The Board of Health wishes everyone a happy and safe Halloween.

Flu Season Information for Westwood Residents

As we prepare for the 2019-2020 flu season, we would like to provide you with an update on information we have received from our flu vaccine provider, Sanofi Pasteur.

This year, due to late-emerging virus strains that circulate globally, the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration decided to delay selection of the flu formulation by one month.

This was done in order to collect additional data to help improve the match of the vaccine strains anticipated for this flu season.

As a result, there will be a delay of our flu vaccine shipments by 3-4 weeks. We have been informed that vaccine will be coming in multiple shipments over several weeks with no definitive number of doses we will receive in each shipment.

Due to this delay, we will not be holding a one day flu clinic in October. Instead, we will be having several smaller clinics during the weekday and evening hours. These clinics will be planned for October into November. Once we have received enough vaccine to hold the clinics we will let you know the dates and times and how to make an appointment for yourself and your family to come in for your flu shot.

Thank you for your co-operation and please check the Health Department website for updates as we work through the changes to our immunization efforts for Westwood residents this year.

Minutes Matter… Get Out & Stay Out!

October is Fire Prevention Month. This year’s campaign “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out. Make sure everyone in your home knows at least 2 ways out of every room, practices your escape plan and knows where your designated meeting spot is located.

If you do have a fire in your home it’s important to get everyone out as quickly as possible. Wait until you are safely outside and then call 9-1-1. Never go back inside.

Fall Safety Checklist:

  • Check that all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
  • Change you smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries on 11/3/19 when you turn your clocks back.
  • Schedule inspection and maintenance of your heating system.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned.
  • Keep a 3 ft. radius around portable space heaters clear of all flammable materials.
  • If you are remodeling or building a new home consider adding fire sprinklers.
  • Always sleep with bedroom doors closed!
