A word from the Town Administrator

Residents,

I hope you all have had an enjoyable and relaxing end to your summer.

As we progress into the Fall months, we transition to busier times with more road congestion caused in part by the start of the school year. To improve safety for children walking to school, Westwood instituted the addition of adult crossing guards some thirty five years ago. The crossing guards were placed at key locations during peak pedestrian crossing hours (i.e., before and after school).

While the primary role of adult school crossing guards is to guide children safely across a street—children, parents and motorists also have responsibilities to do their part.

Parents should speak to their children about how to stay safe while walking or biking up to and in crosswalks. Instill in each child safety behaviors especially to listen and be mindful of instructions from crossing guards.

Motorists must also take precautions when traveling past schools. The speed limit in school zones and roadways in the immediate vicinity of schools is 20 MPH. Unfortunately, three years ago, a crossing guard was struck and seriously injured in a cross walk. The safety of our guards and our children relies heavily on the caution of motorists.

Caution and courtesy are not options.

Crossing Guard

Every day, crossing guards and bus drivers report motorists who speed through cross walks and pass stopped buses with lights flashing. Some bus drivers also report discourteous responses from motorists when the bus drivers call attention to inappropriate driving risking pedestrian safety.

The Town urges all motorists and parents traveling past schools at the beginning or end of the school day to use extreme caution and obey the laws within the school zone.

Together we can continue to provide a safe environment for our crossing guards, children, parents and motorists if we all take a moment and recognize our surroundings and endeavor to ensure safety.  Be mindful of the fact that you will forever be troubled should you be involved in a serious accident.

Remember, safety doesn’t just happen. We have to make it happen.

Westwood Comprehensive Plan

Comp Plan 2.0

The Update is in full swing!  Westwood’s Comprehensive Plan is a long range land use policy document that focuses on Westwood’s vision for the next decade and action strategies to achieve that vision.

In the spring the Committee released a survey and held a community visioning session that generated preliminary goals and ideas. The Steering Committee received valuable ideas and input for the Plan’s update.  Committee members are working over the summer to compile ideas to prepare an update to the existing 2000 Comprehensive Plan.  The Committee expects to meet in the early fall and begin public workshops to present draft goals and action strategies at a series of public work sessions to be held throughout the fall and into the winter.  Portions of Planning Board meetings will be set aside as interactive work sessions providing opportunities for discussion, questions, and changes.  All residents are encouraged to review material and participate in the Plan’s update by attending the workshops and submitting comments.  All meetings and material will be posted in advance and made publically available for review and input.   It is expected that the full Plan’s update will occur over a 3-5 month process as different topic areas will have focused discussions in detail on different dates and there will be a series of meetings.

You are encouraged to sign up to receive meeting notifications to learn about upcoming meetings and events.  All material will be posted on the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee’s webpage when available here.   Once meetings are scheduled they will be posted on the Committee’s page and on the Town’s main meeting calendar.

All information related to the Plan’s update, meetings, and material may be found at www.bit.do/WWComprehensiveplan We hope to hear more from you!

Westwood Department of Public Works

Paving Update:

The Department of Public Works has coordinated with Deroma and Sons Construction to replace the existing sidewalks along Route 109 with new concrete sidewalks and granite curbing while also bringing them all to ADA compliance. This project is being funded through the recently approved sidewalk rehabilitation article during the 2019 Spring Annual Town Meeting. The project limits are from Nahatan Street to the Walpole Town line along Route 109. This work started on August 12th 2019 and will continue through to the end of October 2019. Any remaining work after November 1, 2019 will be completed the first of Spring 2020. The Public Works website will feature updates every 2 weeks depicting progress and scheduled locations of the work. There should be very limited disruption to traffic as all of the work is off the edge of the roadway and there will also be sidewalk accommodations for all pedestrians throughout the project.

For more information about these projects, please contact the DPW: 781-326-8661

What you need to know about Contamination in Recycling Collection?

Did you know the largest leading cause of increased cost to recycling collection is due to contamination?  Major culprits found in our recycling are plastic bags, food items, and cords.  If Waste Management notices contamination in the barrels, the barrel will not be emptied.

Extra Recycling Barrels are now available at the DPW

Is your recycling overflowing and you are in need of an extra barrel?  Good news, you can now request an extra recycling barrel by calling the DPW at 781-251-2587.  Residents will be charged a onetime fee of $60.00 for the extra recycle barrel (additional trash barrels can also be purchased for $150/annually).  Thank you for your help in promoting recycling!

For more information about any of the above events, including what is and is not permitted, please contact the DPW at: 781-251-2587

Westwood Board of Health

Did You Know:

Mosquito populations are active into the fall? The Westwood Board of Health would like to remind residents to take action to avoid mosquito bites and reduce mosquito populations. The risk of contracting EEE and WNV from an infected mosquito is heightened through early October. Mosquitoes can carry disease until the first hard frost.

To avoid mosquitoes please consider the following:

  • Limit your time outdoors during peak periods of mosquito activity (dusk and dawn) or if you must remain outdoors, wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants.
  • Use a mosquito repellent that contains DEET (the chemical N-N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) and follow the directions on the label.
  • Take special care to cover up the arms and legs of children playing outdoors.  When you bring a baby outdoors, cover the baby’s carriage or playpen with mosquito netting.
  • Fix holes in your screens and make sure they are tight-fitting on all doors and windows.
  • Remove standing water around your home. Make sure water does not collect and stagnate in ceramic pots, trash cans, recycling containers, old tires, wading pools, birds baths, etc.  Remove leaves and debris that may prevent drainage of roof gutters.

For more information, please visit the District’s website at www.norfolkcountymosquito.org or call (781) 762-3681.

Westwood Day Goes Green(er)

Composting at Westwood Day

You’ll notice something new when you visit the Food Court area at Westwood Day this year: composting stations. The Westwood Environmental Action Committee (WEAC)  is partnering with Black Earth Compost to bring composting to Westwood Day for the first time ever.

How does it work? You’ll find a waste station in the Food Court area this year. Just bring all of your waste to the station and WEAC volunteers will help to sort it into the appropriate bin: compost, recycling or trash. Black Earth will bring all of the food scraps, soiled napkins, used paper towels (and more) collected at Westwood Day to their facility to make it into nutrient-rich soil, diverting it forever from the waste stream.

Up to a quarter of what winds up in residential trash receptacles can be composted- and that doesn’t even include yard waste. This means you can significantly reduce landfill waste, and create nutrient-rich soil instead, through the practice of composting.

Composting services like Black Earth make composting easier than ever. Black Earth offers curbside pickup of compost as a paid service. Currently they have 40 households in Westwood enrolled. Rather than throw away your food scraps, used napkins, paper towels, soiled pizza boxes, etc. into your regular trash, you can toss these items into a 13-gallon curbside animal-proof bin provided by Black Earth; they pick up filled compost bins from enrolled homes once a week. Come spring, you can receive a voucher for a bag of completed compost redeemable at participating garden centers. Not a gardener? Don’t need the compost to touch up your lawn? Consider donating your voucher. Visit blackearthcompost.com to learn more.

Look for the WEAC volunteers at the waste station in the Food Court at Westwood Day. Together we can divert compostable items from the waste stream while creating some new, rich soil. GO GREEN(er)!

Babe Ruth League

BRL

Westwood Babe Ruth (WBR) will be again fielding teams in a Fall Ball developmental league run by the Diamond Club in Norwood. This program is designed for the "Graduated" Little Leaguer, introducing them to their first experience on a full sized diamond. Teams are made up of mostly this age group and a few 2nd year and 3rd year Babe Ruth players who will mentor the new players. It has been highly successful and recommended for all players making this transition. The Babe Ruth Coaching staff as well as High School Varsity players will be working with your players on their game.

12 games are played over 6 consecutive weekends in the fall starting in early September and running up to the end of October. That's usually 2 games per weekend. There are no standings and the atmosphere is casual and fun as the players work on their games. Games are all played on 3 Norwood fields - Wilson, Willet and Balch over Friday nights - 5:00pm and 7:30pm, Saturday's and Sunday's 9 and 11:30am and 2PM. Large rosters are made to accommodate the multi-sport athletes. All Westwood teams typically play each other as well as teams from Norwood, Dedham, Canton, Needham, Dover and Medfield.

Please contact Gary Cappuccino, President WBR at gcapp@aol.com or 617-640-1620 to obtain the forms to register.  If you were registered and played Spring WLL or BR look for emails from Coach Cap with the forms attached to download and mail. Hope to see you and your friends on the fields this Fall!
