October is Fire Prevention Month and the Westwood Fire Department would like to give you some tips to help keep your family and home as safe as possible. Homes today are filled with synthetic materials which results in fire spreading much more quickly than it did when furnishings were made off cotton and wool. Forty years ago people would have, on average, 17 minutes to escape a burning home, now it’s more like 3 minutes. This is why it is so important to have the proper number of working smoke alarms in your house. Working smoke alarms cut your risk of perishing in a house fire in half. Make sure that everyone in your home knows what the smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they go off. It’s a good idea to test smoke alarms monthly by using the test button and replace the batteries annually.
Practice makes perfect, so practice evacuating and establish a designated meeting place that is a safe distance from your home. A meeting place will allow you to know that everyone has made it safely out. Once you are safely outside call 911. Never go back in to retrieve pets, they are very resourceful and will usually find their way out. Remember, minutes matter so get out and stay out! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
Please click here for the registration form. If possible, copy your insurance cards beforehand. Children under 18 must be accompanied by and adult
