Letter from the Town Administrator

Residents,

I hope you all have had an enjoyable and relaxing end to your summer.

As we progress into the Fall months, we transition to busier times with more road congestion caused by the start of the school year. To improve safety for children walking to school, Westwood instituted the addition of adult crossing guards some thirty five years ago. The crossing guards were placed at key locations during peak pedestrian crossing hours (i.e., before and after school).

While the primary role of adult school crossing guards is to guide children safely across a street—children, parents and motorists also have responsibilities to do their part.

Crossing Guard

Parents should speak to their children about how to stay safe while walking or biking up to and in crosswalks. Instill in each child safety behaviors and to listen and be mindful of instructions from crossing guards.

Motorists must also take precautions when traveling past schools. The speed limit in school zones and roadways in the immediate vicinity of schools is 20 MPH. Unfortunately, three years ago, a crossing guard was struck and seriously injured in a cross walk. The safety of our guards and our children relies heavily on the caution of motorists.

Courtesy is not an option.

Every day, crossing guards and bus drivers report motorists who speed through cross walks and pass stopped buses with lights flashing. Some bus drivers also report discourteous responses from motorists when the bus drivers call attention to inappropriate driving risking pedestrian safety.

The Town urges all motorists and parents traveling past schools at the beginning or end of the school day to use extreme caution and obey the laws within the school zone.

Together we can continue to provide a safe environment for our crossing guards, children, parents and motorists if we all take a moment and recognize our surroundings and endeavor to ensure safety.

Remember, safety doesn’t just happen. We have to make it happen.

Introducing the Housing Production Plan

Housing

Stay Tuned!

The Housing Partnership, a group appointed by the Board of Selectmen, is embarking on the creation of a Housing Production Plan for the Town this fall.  A Housing Production Plan (HPP) is a specific document regulated in the Commonwealth’s affordable housing law, commonly known as Chapter 40B.  A HPP is a strategy developed by a community to meet its affordable housing requirements. A proactive HPP also considers the particular needs of its residents respective to all kinds of housing, and identifies specific challenges and solutions to housing development in that community. A community can use its HPP to inform and improve proposed development and planning.

The Housing Partnership, supported by the Town’s Housing & Zoning Division, will seek to create a plan that incorporates as much public input as possible, in addition to the latest available data and research. Community visioning workshops will be held in late fall 2018, and input will be solicited both online, in person, and through the mail. Dates will be announced on the town website, in the Westwood Wire, and published in the Westwood Press.

We hope you will join the conversation and share your thoughts, needs, and ideas for housing in Westwood!

Westwood Day 2018!

Westwood Ahead of the Curve on ADUs

A study published by the Pioneer Institute and the Massachusetts Smart Growth Coalition lists Westwood among a small group of municipalities in the Greater Boston area with zoning bylaws that adopt best practices in permitting Accessory Dwelling Units.

Known as accessory apartments, in-law apartments or even granny flats, ADUs are small dwellings located within or behind a single family home. Although ADUs are widely considered by housing experts, sustainable development advocates and community planning organizations to be a beneficial mode of residential development to both municipalities and homeowners, nearly 2/3 of the 100 cities and towns in the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) region outside Boston restrict development of ADUs.

If you are interested in learning more about accessory apartments, or wish to obtain a permit to add one to your home, please contact Sarah Bouchard, Housing & Zoning Agent, at sbouchard@townhall.westwood.ma.us or 781-251-2598.

Sunscreen Dispensers

sunscreen

The Westwood Health Department has installed sunscreen dispensers at the School Street Playground, Morrison Field and the Tot Lot. We were able to secure the dispensers free of charge as a pilot program from SunStations, USA. If the project is successful we will be expanding to other parks and fields in Westwood. Please supervise children in sunscreen use, so there will be enough available for all.

We are looking for input on a Website Redesign!

Website

We are planning a redesign of the town’s website (www.townhall.westwood.ma.us).  We are looking for volunteers to help with an overall evaluation of the current site and the identification of improvements/changes.  Some of the effort will be done independently, but there may be a few planned meetings which can be scheduled to accommodate volunteer availability. If you are interested and would like to help, please call (781-320-1074) or email Donna McClellan, dmcclellan@townhall.westwood.ma.us.
