Islington Center Renderings
Dear Neighbors,
We cordially invite the residents of Westwood (and especially Islington) to an informal get together this Saturday morning, March 17th at 9:00 am at Islington Pizza for coffee and discussion of the Islington Redevelopment Project. So far the feedback that we’ve received from the community has been very helpful in shaping this project and we desire to continue the dialog with an informal get together with me and the project architect, Mike McKay. This will give residents an opportunity to ask questions of us directly, without the engineers and attorneys, and get to know us without the time constraints of a formal meeting. We hope to see you there.
Thank you,
Giorgio Petruzziello

Did you know that it is time to plan
for mosquito control for 2018? As you may know, truck-based mosquito spraying
is conducted by the Norfolk County Mosquito Control District in the summer
months by request only, weather permitting. Applications are based on requests
and the NCMCD sprays area-wide in neighborhoods to most effectively control
area-wide mosquito problems. If you do not want your property sprayed during
these applications, you must now use an on-line form hosted by the MA Department
of Agriculture. These online
exclusion requests are immediately forwarded to the Mosquito Control District
and the exclusion will be effective within 2 weeks. Requests can now be made at
any time of year but do need to be resubmitted each year - exclusions cancel on
December 31st of each year.
For more information please contact the Westwood
Health Department at mrc@townhall.westwood.ma.us or the
Norfolk County Mosquito Control District’s website at www.norfolkcountymosquito.org or call 781.762.3681.

The simple answer
is because it is the law. Other than the few exceptions listed in the amended 2009
IRC and IBC Building Codes, Sections R105.2 and 105.2 respectively, the
construction, alteration, or repair of a building or structure requires a
permit. This also is true for plumbing, electrical, gas, and mechanical
projects. When you are unsure whether you need a permit, call the Building
Department. We will not make you get a permit if you don’t need one. Beware of
contractors that suggest that you don’t need to bother. Failure to obtain a
permit when one is required and the failure to obtain all the necessary
inspections including a final inspection can be very costly.
Spring is the time of the year where homeowners look at all types of construction projects for their home including improvements. Make sure you understand why you need a permit for certain work. There is no harm is asking.

On Tuesday, January 9th, Westwood
Cares was happy to host a community event, “Vaping:
What Parents Need to Know”, presented by Dr. Michael Siegel, Dr. Richard
Saitz and Dr. Emily Rothman of the Boston University School of Public Health.
Thank you to all of the parents and other community
members who came out to learn more about vaping. Thanks, also, to the various
people and organizations who helped bring the event to Westwood, including the
Westwood High School PTO and Westwood Youth & Family Services.
Westwood Cares has summarized the key points from the presentation. Our hope is that the presentation, a video of which can now be found
on the Westwood Media Center website, will be helpful to you in understanding
