Shellfish Growing Area Updates
The Division of Marine Fisheries classifies all shellfish growing areas for suitability of shellfish harvest and consumption and defines the boundaries of all classified areas. A recent evaluation of our shellfish classification areas has identified eight locations that require new boundary definitions and redesignations in Outer Cape Cod shellfish growing areas (OC1, OC7, OC8, OC9 and OC10) as well as South Cape Cod shellfish growing areas (SC42, SC47 and SC52). In order to facilitate more effective shellfish growing area management of SC47, we will move the northern edge south from the mainland to the northern tip of North Monomoy Island. In addition, we will combine SC52N with SC52S and move the boundaries seaward of the constantly shifting outer beach which moves the OC1 boundary seaward. We will also lower the northern boundary of OC1 southward to exclude houses on the shoreline north of the Pleasant Bay entrance. OC7 and OC8 will be combined with OC9 and both OC9 boundaries north and south are redrawn to cover all of the shoreline no longer included in OC1. The eastern boundary of OC10 will be shifted slightly to the east. These changes will take place on June 1, 2024 and additional redefinitions and redesignations could be identified as we continue to evaluate our current shellfish growing area boundaries and classifications.
