For-Hire Fishing in Massachusetts is Scheduled to Reopen on May 25.
On May 18, 2020 Governor Baker issued COVID-19 Order No. 33 “Implementing a Phased Reopening of Workplaces and Imposing Workplace Safety Measures to Address COVID-19” and COVID-19 Order No. 34 “Expanding Access to and Use of State Beaches and Addressing Other Outdoor Recreational Activities.” In combination, these orders will allow the for-hire fishing industry to reopen, subject to certain public health and workplace safety guidelines, beginning on Monday, May 25, 2020. These public health and workplace safety guidelines are set forth in the “Workplace Safety and Reopening Standards for For-Hire Fishing and Charters: issued by the Massachusetts Executive Office Energy and Environmental Affairs (EOEEA) and are available online.
Accordingly, effective May 25, 2020, the Division of Marine Fisheries is rescinding the April 27, 2020 Statement of Permit Conditions that prohibited for-hire permit holders from conducting for-hire fishing trips for the duration of the Governor’s Stay at Home Advisory. For-hire permit holders will receive a new Statement of Permit Conditions that will allow them to reopen their business operations consistent with EOEEA’s applicable workplace safety standards.
