Earth Day With the County of San Diego

The Earth Day Fair will be held at the County Operations Center, 5500 Overland Drive, from 11 am - 1 pm on April 22nd, 2024. To help the celebration last all year long the County of San Diego has recently posted online resources on events you can join, how-to videos, hikes, science and technology activities, e-book collections, and proactive ways to live more sustainably.

Public Health Updates

Never a Bother Youth Suicide Prevention

The CDPH Office of Suicide Prevention launched Never a Bother, a new youth suicide prevention campaign to increase awareness, support, and provide resources for California’s youth. This campaign lets youth and young people know they are never a bother, no problem is too small, and that it is important to check in with themselves, friends, and family.

Epinephrine in Schools

CDPH, in partnership with the California Department of Education, has issued a new statewide standing order for epinephrine in schools to help reduce morbidity and mortality associated with anaphylaxis (life-threatening allergic reaction). This standing order authorizes a California school district, county office of education or charter school to obtain epinephrine auto injectors for elementary schools, junior high schools, middle schools, and high schools.

National Minority Health Month

April is National Minority Health Month — a chance to highlight the importance of improving the health of racial and ethnic minority communities and reducing health disparities. Check out this National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NMHM) schedule of events, and explore resources from FDA’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity to learn about health equity.

Learning Communities for School Success Program

The Learning Communities for School Success Program (LCSSP) provides funds to local education agencies (LEA) to support programs aimed at improving student outcomes by reducing truancy and supporting students who are at risk of dropping out of school or are victims of crime. The LCSSP is the result of Proposition 47, which reduced the penalties for certain non-serious, non-violent offenses and allocates 25% of the resulting statewide savings for LEA grants. Applications for the 8th Cohort of LCSSP grantees are due May 1st, 2024.

School Health Profiles & Data

The CDC recently released the 2022 School Health Profiles survey results. Survey results and data can be explored using the new Profiles Explorer tool. This dashboard allows schools and other educational agencies to access data on how schools and districts are providing health education and services, address bullying, engage families and much more.

Family-School Partnership Workplan

The Action for Healthy Kids national non-profit has released a new resource, Family-School Partnership Workplan for Engaging Diverse Communities in Healthy Schools, designed to motivate and challenge educators to align, advance and/or adopt effective evidence-based strategies to foster authentic family partnerships.

Bee and Butterfly Sustainability Festival

On Saturday April 20th from 11 am - 3 pm, the San Diego County Library will be hosting the fourth annual Bee and Butterfly Sustainability Festival at Valley Center. This event will provide presentations, seed planting demonstrations and kid friendly crafts and DIY projects. The event is family friendly and free to attend.

Lets Taco-Bout Youth Mental Health

On Wednesday May 1st from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm, the Vista Community Clinic will be hosting Let's Taco-Bout Youth Mental Health, special discussion on youth mental health at San Marcos Community Hall. Topics to be discussed include health coping skills, tobacco prevention and more. The event is family friendly and free to all.
